Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

They were running out of places to hide. The Valenti empire was fractured, divided between those loyal to Dante and those bought by Anthony and the Moretti family.

Dante brought Camille and the infant to an old, forgotten subterranean bunker beneath the grand theater his family owned in Manhattan. The theater above was dark, but down below, surrounded by concrete walls and vintage movie props, they found a temporary sanctuary.

Leo was dead. Mercer was dead. The only people left in the world who knew the truth were Dante and a neonatal nurse who had stepped into a nightmare.

Camille sat on a dusty velvet sofa, cradling the tiny baby. Despite Mercer’s claim that the child was a "clone" or a decoy meant to die, the baby’s vitals were improving under her care. She had flushed the remaining toxins from his system.

"Dante," Camille said softly, watching the mob boss clean his weapons under a bare lightbulb. "Look at him. Even if what Mercer said is true... even if he was created in a lab to deceive you... he’s innocent. He didn't ask for any of this."

Dante looked over at the child. For the first time, his expression wasn't filled with calculating coldness, but with a deep, profound sorrow. "He has her eyes, Camille. Whatever they did in that lab, they used Isabella’s genetic material. He might not be my blood, but he is a piece of the woman I loved."

He walked over, sitting next to her on the couch. He reached out a massive, scarred finger, and the tiny baby wrapped his entire hand around it. A heavy silence settled between them, a brief moment of humanity amidst the looming war.

"Anthony thinks he’s won," Dante said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "He’s calling a meeting of the Commission tomorrow night at the Moretti estate. He’s going to announce my 'incapacity' due to grief, claim leadership of the Valenti family, and present the other baby—the one he stole—as the legitimate heir to the throne."

"What are you going to do?" Camille asked, her heart racing.

"I’m going to walk into that meeting," Dante said. "And I’m going to show them what happens to traitors. But I need you to do something for me, Camille. Something dangerous."

"What?"

"I need you to sneak into the St. Jude's Asylum catacombs—the place Silas told us about. The Genesis Project. Anthony must have left a paper trail there, the original genetic records that prove the child he has is a fraud. Without those documents, the Commission will believe Anthony. I need the absolute proof to strip his legitimacy before I kill him."

Camille swallowed hard. "Going into a black-market genetic lab run by a woman called the Countess? Alone?"

"You won't be alone. I’m sending two of my last remaining loyal soldiers to protect you. But you’re the only one who knows what medical records to look for," Dante said, looking deeply into her eyes. "Please, Camille. For Isabella. For this child."

The next evening, the plan was set in motion. While Dante prepared for a suicidal confrontation at the Moretti estate, Camille, dressed in dark scrubs and accompanied by two silent Valenti loyalists, entered the abandoned, crumbling ruins of St. Jude's Asylum in Queens.

The air inside the asylum was thick with mold and the scent of decay. They descended into the flooded basement, navigating through rusted iron grates until they found a hidden, pristine steel door with a biometric scanner. One of the soldiers used an electronic hacking device to override the lock, and the door slid open to reveal a horrifyingly modern world.

The Genesis Project was a labyrinth of glass panels, glowing cryogenic tanks, and rows of monitors. It looked less like a hospital and more like a human assembly line.

As Camille crept through the facility, searching the main server terminal, a voice echoed behind her, cold and aristocratic.

"I must admit, Nurse Hart, I didn't expect you to have the audacity to walk into my parlor."

Camille spun around. Standing there was the Countess—a beautiful woman in her fifties, elegant, dressed in a flawless white lab coat, surrounded by four heavily armed guards. Camille's two soldiers were already on the floor, unconscious or dead.

"You're the one who helped Anthony," Camille said, backing up against the terminal. "You created these children."

"Created? No. I merely perfected them," the Countess smiled coldly. "Anthony Valenti was an excellent client with vast resources. But you’ve made a fundamental error in your assumptions, my dear."

"What error?" Camille asked, her hand secretly reaching behind her back to press a download drive into the server port.

"You believed Dr. Mercer," the Countess laughed softly. "Mercer was a fool who thought he was in control. He believed the baby in the hospital was the decoy, and the baby Anthony took was the real one."

The Countess stepped closer, her eyes gleaming with malice. "The truth is much more delicious. The baby you saved—the one with the crescent moon mark—is the only true biological child of Isabella and Dante Valenti. Dante isn't sterile, Nurse Hart. That was a lie fabricated by Anthony and Mercer years ago to make Dante doubt himself. Anthony stole a true clone—a genetically engineered lookalike—to keep with him, while leaving the genuine Valenti heir in the hospital to be slowly poisoned to death!"

Camille’s breath caught in her throat. The baby she had been protecting, the one currently hidden in the theater bunker, was Dante’s true, biological son. The switch was a double-bluff meant to ensure Dante would abandon his own flesh and blood if he ever discovered the plot.

"And now," the Countess said, raising a silenced pistol toward Camille's head, "the true lineage ends tonight."
