Chapter 5 - The Commission Bloodbath

(Word count: ~3,540)

Just as the Countess pulled the trigger, the overhead lights shattered into complete darkness. A sudden explosion rocked the facility—not from Camille’s side, but from a calculated breach of the main power grid.

In the pitch black, gunfire erupted. Camille dove beneath the main server console, her fingers frantically clawing at the flash drive she had inserted into the terminal. The download indicator on the small device blinked green—100% complete. She ripped it out just as a body crashed onto the desk above her.

It was one of Dante's loyalists, who hadn't been dead, only waiting for the signal. "Nurse Hart! Run!" he yelled, firing into the dark.

Camille didn't look back. She sprinted through the smoky, emergency-lit corridors of the underground facility, her lungs burning, the flash drive gripped tightly in her fist. She managed to escape into the rain-slicked streets of Queens, hailed a cab, and gave the address to the Moretti estate in Long Island. She had to get to Dante before he made a fatal mistake.

Meanwhile, at the opulent Moretti mansion, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. The heads of the five mafia families sat around a massive mahogany table in the grand ballroom. At the head of the table sat Donato Moretti, and next to him stood Anthony Valenti, wearing a smug, victorious smile. In a bassinet behind Anthony lay a perfectly healthy newborn baby, wrapped in silk.

"Dante Valenti has abandoned his duties," Anthony announced to the council, his voice echoing through the room. "His grief over Isabella has driven him mad. He has stolen a dying infant from the hospital and fled. As the next in line, I claim the Valenti seat, and I present to you the future of our family—my son, whom Isabella carried in secret to protect him from Dante's enemies."

The other bosses murmured in agreement, nodding their heads. The balance of power was shifting.

Suddenly, the grand double doors of the ballroom were blown off their hinges.

Dante Valenti walked through the smoke alone. He wore a long black wool coat, his hands resting inside his pockets. He walked with the slow, deliberate pace of an executioner. Behind him, dozens of Moretti guards lay groaning or dead in the foyer.

"You claim my seat, Anthony?" Dante's voice boomed, cutting through the murmurs like a scythe.

Anthony went pale, backing up toward the bassinet. "Dante! You're a rogue element! You're compromised! Guards, kill him!"

None of the guards moved. Dante’s reputation alone was a shield. He walked straight to the table, looking around at the other bosses. "You think this traitor represents my blood? You think he has the right to sit at this table?"

"He has an heir, Dante," Donato Moretti spoke up, his voice gravelly. "You have nothing but a dead wife and a missing child."

"He has a lie!" a voice screamed from the back of the room.

Camille burst through the side entrance, drenched in rain, her hair wild, holding the flash drive high in the air. "I have the genetic records from the Genesis Project! Anthony lied to all of you!"

Anthony panicked. He drew his gun, aiming directly at Camille. "Shut up, you bitch!"

BANG!

A shot echoed through the ballroom, but it wasn't from Anthony's gun. Dante had pulled his weapon with supernatural speed, shooting Anthony directly through the right shoulder. Anthony dropped his weapon, screaming in pain as he collapsed to the floor.

Dante stepped forward, taking the flash drive from Camille’s hand and slamming it onto the table in front of Donato Moretti. "Plug it in. Read the files. Look at the genetic coding of the baby in that bassinet."

Moretti signaled his tech specialist, who quickly pulled up the files on a laptop. Within seconds, the specialist looked up, his face filled with shock. "Donato... the baby in the bassinet is a genetic clone manufactured from Anthony’s DNA. It’s a fraud. And there’s an audio file attached... a recorded conversation between Anthony and Dr. Mercer detailing the assassination of Isabella Valenti."

The entire ballroom erupted into shouts of outrage. In the mafia world, killing a boss’s wife and fabricating a lineage to steal a seat was an unforgivable sin against the code of honor.

Donato Moretti looked down at Anthony with disgust. "You brought a fake child into my house. You violated the commission." Moretti looked up at Dante. "He is yours to judge."

Dante walked over to the bleeding Anthony, looking down at his cousin with cold, unyielding hatred. "You killed Isabella. You tried to kill my son."

"Dante, please..." Anthony begged, clutching his shattered shoulder. "We're family... we're blood..."

"My family is dead because of you," Dante said softly. He raised his weapon and fired one final shot, ending Anthony's life right there on the ballroom floor.

Dante turned to the bassinet, looking at the clone child. He looked back at Camille, his eyes asking the silent question.

"The real baby... your true son... he's safe, Dante," Camille whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "The Countess told me the truth before she died. The baby we saved from the hospital... the one at the theater... he is your biological son. He survived the bomb, and he survived the poison. He’s waiting for you."

For the first time in nineteen days, a faint, genuine smile touched Dante Valenti's lips.
