Chapter 1 - The 39-Minute Miracle

The leather of the Maybach’s interior smelled of expensive tobacco, ozone, and cold, hard authority.
I sat as far from him as the wide backseat allowed, my hands still white-knuckled around the crumpled piece of paper that held my mother’s life. Outside, the neon lights of Las Vegas blurred into long, bleeding streaks of gold and red.
Beside me, the man they called "Boss" did not look like a savior. He looked like the storm that ruined empires.
"Who is your father?" his voice cut through the silence, deep and lethal.
"Richard Bennett," I whispered, the name tasting like ash on my tongue. "But he... he doesn’t have a daughter. Not anymore."
The man turned his head slowly. The sharp, aristocratic lines of his jaw tightened. "Richard Bennett is a fool who builds his house on sand. And he just let his most valuable asset walk into the jaws of a wolf."
"I am not an asset," I said, my voice shaking but defiant. "I am just a girl trying to save her mother."
"In my world, sweetheart, everything is an asset. And everyone has a price." He didn’t look at me as he reached into his breast pocket, pulling out a sleek black phone. He tapped the screen once. "Luca. Contact St. Agnes Hospital. Tell the Chief of Surgery that Alessio Romano is taking over the billing for Patient Eleanor Bennett."
My breath hitched. Romano.
The name sent a shiver down my spine. The Romanos didn’t just own hotels or real estate. In the whispered rumors of the city, they owned the police, the judges, and the very ground the casinos were built upon. They were the undisputed kings of the underworld. And I had just hijacked his private elevator.
"You're paying it?" I gasped, looking at him in disbelief. "Just like that? You don't even know me."
"I don't need to know you to know what a Bennett debt is worth," Alessio said, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made it hard to breathe. "But do not mistake my intervention for charity, Elena. I am a businessman. When I pay a debt, I collect the interest."
"I don't have any money," I said, panic rising in my chest.
"I have enough money to buy your father's entire lineage ten times over," Alessio murmured, leaning slightly closer. The scent of his expensive cologne—sandalwood and cedar—wrapped around me like a velvet trap. "I do not want your money, Elena."
"Then what do you want?"
The car suddenly lurched to a halt. The tinted window showed the glowing emergency entrance of St. Agnes.

Alessio glanced at his watch. 18 minutes left.
"I want the one thing Richard Bennett threw away tonight," Alessio whispered, his lips brushing past my ear, sending a jolt of electricity straight to my core. "I want you."
