Chapter 4 - The Snake in the Garden

Living in the Romano estate was like living in a fortress of gold and shadows.

For the first three weeks, Alessio was a ghost. He left early, returned late, and only interacted with me during our mandatory public dinners. Yet, every detail of my mother's recovery was reported to me daily. She was safe in Switzerland, healing beautifully.

I was beginning to think this arrangement might actually be simple.

I was wrong.

One afternoon, while walking through the estate’s private rose garden, a voice interrupted my thoughts.

"You really think you're special, don't you?"

I spun around. Standing near the stone archway was Celeste. She had bypassed the security somehow—or rather, someone had let her in. She was wearing a tight designer dress, her eyes venomous.

"Celeste," I said coldly. "How did you get in here?"

"My father has connections, even in this dark world," Celeste sneered, stepping closer. "Enjoy this little fairy tale while you can, Elena. Alessio doesn't love you. He's using you to get to our father’s land deeds. Once he has them, he’ll dump you back into the trash where you belong."

"At least I have a price," I replied, keeping my voice steady despite the flutter of panic in my chest. "Our father didn't even think you were worth saving when Romano Holdings threatened to pull the plug on his company last week. He offered you to Alessio first, didn't he?"

Celeste’s face twisted in rage. It was a shot in the dark, but her reaction proved I had hit the bullseye. Richard had tried to sell his precious Celeste to save himself, and Alessio had rejected her.

"You bitch!" Celeste lunged at me, her manicured nails aiming for my face.

Before she could touch me, a heavy hand grabbed her wrist mid-air.

Alessio appeared from the shadows of the stone archway, his grip on Celeste so tight her bones groaned.

"I do not tolerate trespassers," Alessio growled, his voice vibrating with absolute fury. "And I certainly do not tolerate anyone laying a hand on what is mine."

"Alessio!" Celeste whimpered, her tears turning fake in an instant. "She insulted me! She’s using you! She only cares about your money!"

"I know exactly what Elena cares about," Alessio said, throwing her hand away as if it were garbage. "And she is worth a thousand of you. Luca!"

The head guard appeared instantly.

"Take Miss Bennett to the gates. And tell Richard that because of his daughter’s little visit, the interest rate on his debt just doubled. He has forty-eight hours to pay, or I start seizing his physical assets."

Celeste gasped, realization dawning on her. Her petty jealousy had just ruined her father. "No! Please, Alessio!"

"Get out," Alessio commanded.

As Celeste was dragged away, screaming, Alessio turned to me. His eyes ran over my face, looking for any scratches. "Are you hurt?"

May you like

"No," I whispered. "Thank you."

He stepped closer, his hand rising to cup my jaw. His thumb brushed against my lower lip, sending a spark of desire through my veins that terrified me. "I told you, Elena. You are under my protection. No one hurts you. Not even your own blood."
