Chapter 2 - The Contract of Blood and Silk

Inside the pristine corridors of St. Agnes, the atmosphere was chaotic until Alessio Romano walked through the doors.
The moment his boots clicked on the polished tile, the frantic energy of the hospital froze. Three of his armed guards fanned out, creating a wall between the public and their boss. The hospital director himself came running down the hall, adjusting his tie with trembling hands.
"Mr. Romano! We—we didn't expect you," the director stammered, bowing slightly.
"My patient is Eleanor Bennett," Alessio said, his voice quiet but carrying an undeniable threat. "The deposit has been cleared. I expect the best surgical team in this state to be in that room in exactly five minutes. If she flatlines, your career dies with her."
"Of course! Immediately!" The director turned and began barking orders at the staff.
I stood by the glass partition of the ICU, watching my mother’s frail body. She looked so small beneath the machines. Tears finally spilled over my eyelashes, hot and fast.
"She is safe now," Alessio's voice sounded right behind me. He didn't touch me, but his presence was a solid, warm shield against the cold hospital air.
"Why are you doing this?" I asked, staring at his reflection in the glass. "You could have any woman in the world. Why me? Is it to spite my father?"
Alessio’s lips curved into a cold, dark smile. "Your father owes Romano Holdings ninety million dollars, Elena. He tried to pay me tonight with a portion of his development project—a project built on land he doesn't fully own. He thought he could lie to me."
My heart hammered. "And what does that have to do with me?"
"Richard Bennett’s greatest fear is public ruin. He spent twelve years erasing you and your mother so he could present a perfect, pristine family to the high-society elites," Alessio explained, stepping closer until his chest almost brushed my shoulder. "Imagine his face when he realizes that the daughter he discarded is now protected by the man who holds his leash."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. It wasn't a bill. It was a contract.
"This is a marriage contract," Alessio said smoothly. "Six months. You will live in my estate, accompany me to every public event, and play the role of my treasured fiancée. In exchange, your mother’s medical care is fully funded, and she will be moved to a private recovery villa in Switzerland tomorrow morning."
I stared at the document. "And after six months?"
"You walk away with ten million dollars, a clean slate, and your mother's life," Alessio said.
"And if I refuse?"
Alessio looked at the ICU doors, where the red 'Surgery in Progress' light had just turned on. "Then I withdraw the funds, and we see if your father's pride can perform open-heart surgery."
It wasn't a choice. It was a golden cage, and the lock was already turning.

I took the pen from his hand and signed my name. Elena Bennett.
Alessio took the paper, his fingers brushing mine. "Welcome to the family, Elena. Now, let’s go show your father what he just lost."
