Chapter 2 - The Shadows Within the Walls

The dawn was breaking, casting long, bloody streaks of orange across the grey sky when Carmen Martinez arrived at the Torino mansion. Her face was haggard, her eyes bloodshot, her hands shaking as she fumbled with her keys at the servant's entrance. She looked like a woman walking toward her own execution.
She immediately hurried to the kitchen, intending to clean up before the head chef arrived. But when she pushed the swinging doors open, her heart completely stopped.
Vincent Torino was sitting at the dark mahogany island, a glass of amber scotch resting near his hand, completely untouched. Next to him, curled up on a luxurious velvet blanket on the counter, fast asleep, was Isabella.
"Isabella!" Carmen gasped, dropping her worn canvas bag. She rushed forward, falling to her knees right in front of Vincent, her forehead pressing against the cold tile floor. "Mr. Torino, please! I beg you! She's just a child! She doesn't know anything! Punish me, kill me, do whatever you want, but please let my daughter go!"
Vincent didn't move. He looked down at the weeping woman. "Two hundred thousand dollars, Carmen."
The maid froze, her body stiffening as if she had been hit by lightning.
"That is the amount missing from my construction account as of 3:00 AM," Vincent continued, his voice dangerously smooth. "My men kill for a missing hundred. For two hundred thousand, they wipe out entire families. Tell me why I shouldn't throw both of you into the river tonight."
"I didn't steal it for myself! I swear to God, Mr. Torino!" Carmen cried, her voice cracking with pure agony. "They have my son! They have Leo!"
Vincent narrowed his eyes. "Who has him?"
"The Marcone family," she whispered, the name hanging in the air like a death sentence. "Three weeks ago, they cornered me outside the grocery store. They showed me a video of Leo... he was tied up, bleeding. They told me if I didn't get them the access codes to your financial servers, they would send him back to me piece by piece. I didn't want to betray you, Mr. Torino! You gave me a job when no one else would! But they have my baby boy!"
Vincent stood up, his towering figure casting a shadow over her. "The Marcones are brutal, but they aren't stupid. They don't just ask for money. They want my systemic access. If they get into my core servers, they can track my shipments, my safe houses, my family."
"I only gave them the first layer!" Carmen wept. "I delayed them as much as I could. That's why they cut off Leo's food supply... they told me if I didn't give them the master key by noon today, they would kill him and come for Isabella next. I had to hide her here last night because our apartment isn't safe anymore. I thought... I thought your mansion was the safest fortress in the state."
Vincent looked at Isabella, who was now stirring from her sleep, blinking her big eyes at her crying mother.
Suddenly, the glass window behind Vincent shattered into a million pieces.
BANG! BANG!
Heavy gunfire erupted from the courtyard. The deafening alarms of the mansion blared instantly. High-caliber rounds ripped through the kitchen walls, tearing the copper pans from the ceiling.
"Down!" Vincent roared, grabbing Carmen by the collar and throwing her behind the heavy steel industrial stove. In a fraction of a second, he lunged across the island, scooping Isabella into his arms just as a hail of bullets shredded the velvet blanket she had been sleeping on.
The Marcones weren't waiting for the noon deadline. They were launching a full-scale assault on the Torino stronghold.
Dominic kicked the kitchen doors open, his assault rifle firing into the courtyard. "Boss! We're under siege! It’s a hit squad! They bypassed the outer gates—someone gave them the security codes!"
Vincent ducked as a bullet grazed his shoulder, drawing a line of bright red blood. He looked at Carmen, whose face was pure white with terror. She hadn't just given them financial access. Under torture or threat, she had leaked the mansion's blind spots.
"Dominic! Get the women to the safe room downstairs!" Vincent ordered, pulling a heavy black pistol from his waistband.
"No time, Boss! They’re already in the east hall! We’re cut off!" Dominic yelled, firing a burst into the smoke-filled corridor.

Vincent looked at the terrifying scene. His fortress was compromised. His men were falling. And in his arms, the little girl who had asked him not to fire her mommy was crying silently, her tiny hands gripping his bloody suit jacket.
HOOK FOR NEXT CHAPTER: As Vincent prepared to fight his way out, Dominic suddenly lowered his weapon and turned the barrel directly toward Vincent’s chest. A cruel smile spread across the enforcer's face. 'Sorry, Boss,' Dominic whispered. 'The Marcones pay much better. And they promised me your throne.'
