Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Vault

The air in the underground vault was freezing, smelling of old concrete, rusted iron, and panic. Carmen held Isabella so tightly the little girl could barely breathe. They were surrounded by stacks of gold bullion, millions in cash, and racks of high-grade weaponry, but none of it mattered. The only thing that mattered was the heavy steel door separating them from the slaughter upstairs.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Heavy vibrations echoed through the ceiling. The battle for the Torino mansion was raging above, and by the sound of it, the house was burning.

"Mama," Isabella whispered, her voice trembling. "Is the scary man going to save us?"

Carmen wiped a tear from her daughter's cheek. "Mr. Torino isn't a good man, sweetheart... but right now, he's the only hope we have. Pray, Isabella. Pray he wins."

Suddenly, the lights in the vault flickered and died. The entire underground chamber was plunged into pitch-black darkness.

Isabella gasped. Carmen reached out, frantically feeling the air to find her daughter. "Isabella! Hold my hand!"

"Looking for this?" a cold, unfamiliar voice rasped from the darkness.

A flashlight clicked on, blinding Carmen. The beam illuminated a man wearing a sleek black tactical uniform. He wasn't one of Vincent’s men. He wore the insignia of the Marcone family—a coiled viper on his collar. But worse than that, he was holding a massive hunting knife, and his other hand was wrapped securely around Isabella’s neck.

"Please!" Carmen screamed, falling to her knees. "Take the money! Take everything in the vault! Just leave my daughter alone!"

"The money is already ours, lady," the assassin grinned, his teeth flashing in the harsh light. "Dominic gave us the remote override codes for the vault locks before the assault even started. We didn't just come to kill Vincent. We came to erase his legacy. And you two are the perfect witnesses to tie up."

Upstairs, the heavy steel door of the vault began to groan. Someone was entering the correct security sequence from the outside console.

The assassin laughed, tightening his grip on Isabella, causing the little girl to gasp for air. "Sounds like my boys are done with the big boss. Time to say goodbye, cleaning lady."

The massive vault door slowly swung open, whistling as the air pressure equalized. The silhouette of a giant man stood in the doorway, framed by the red, glowing emergency lights of the corridor behind him. He was covered in soot, his shirt torn to shreds, his skin covered in deep cuts and burns.

It was Vincent. He was alone.

The assassin’s smile faded instantly. "How... how are you alive? There were twelve men upstairs!"

Vincent took a slow, heavy step into the vault. His eyes weren't on the assassin. They were fixed on Isabella’s pale face, tracking the hand clamped around her throat.

"Your men were loud, sloppy, and arrogant," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm, carrying the weight of a cemetery. "They died exactly how they lived."

"Stay back!" the assassin screamed, pressing the blade of the knife against Isabella’s cheek. "One more step and I open her throat! Drop your guns, Torino! Drop them now or the kid dies!"

Vincent stopped. He slowly raised his hands, dropping his empty pistols onto the concrete floor. They clattered loudly, echoing in the enclosed space.

"Good. Now get on your knees!" the assassin ordered, his confidence returning. "I'm going to cut your throat right in front of your little maid and her brat."

Vincent didn't get on his knees. Instead, a chilling, mocking chuckle echoed from his chest. "You think you have leverage because you have the child."

"I do have leverage!" the assassin yelled.

"You don't," Vincent said, his eyes suddenly flashing with a predatory light. "Because you're looking at the wrong target."

Before the assassin could process the words, Carmen, driven by pure, primal maternal instinct, grabbed a heavy gold bar from the shelf next to her and smashed it with all her might directly into the assassin’s knee.

HOOK FOR NEXT CHAPTER: The assassin screams, dropping Isabella as his kneecap shatters. Vincent lunges forward, eliminating the threat in seconds. But as they prepare to escape the burning mansion, the assassin's radio crackles to life with a message from Don Marcone himself: 'We have the boy at the docks. If Vincent Torino doesn't surrender himself within thirty minutes, the boy goes into the industrial meat grinder. Live on camera.'
