Chapter 3 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The sound of gunfire outside seemed to fade into a dull hum compared to the roaring silence between Vincent and his top enforcer. Dominic’s rifle was leveled squarely at Vincent’s heart. The man who had stood by Vincent’s side through three turf wars, the man Vincent trusted with his life, was the real mole.

"You," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a register that sounded like grinding tectonic plates. He didn't flinch. He didn't move. He kept his body positioned perfectly in front of Isabella and Carmen.

"Me, Boss," Dominic sneered, his eyes filled with absolute greed. "Did you really think Carmen could bypass your security servers alone? She’s a maid. She doesn't know a firewall from a hole in the wall. I used her. I threatened her son, I gave her the codes, and I made her the perfect scapegoat. When the Marcones kill you today, the police will find Carmen’s fingerprints all over the stolen funds. You die, she goes to prison, and I take over the Torino family under the Marcone banner."

Isabella whimpered behind Vincent, burying her face into his back. Vincent felt the small, trembling heat of the child, and an unfamiliar emotion surged through him—not fear, but an ancient, righteous fury.

"You broke the code, Dominic," Vincent said softly. "You brought children into this."

"The code is for the dead, Vincent!" Dominic shouted, his finger tightening on the trigger.

BOOM!

A deafening explosion rocked the mansion. The ceiling above them groaned, dropping chunks of heavy plaster and drywall. The Marcones had breached the front foyer with C4. The distraction lasted for a millisecond, but a millisecond was all Vincent Torino needed.

Vincent lunged forward, not away from the gun, but directly into the line of fire. Dominic pulled the trigger, but Vincent’s massive left hand slammed into the barrel, deflecting the shot into the floor. With his right hand, Vincent drove his heavy tactical knife straight through Dominic’s boot, pinning his foot to the hardwood floor.

Dominic screamed in agony. Vincent didn't hesitate. He grabbed the barrel of the rifle, twisted it out of the traitor’s grip, and slammed the butt of the weapon into Dominic’s jaw, knocking him unconscious instantly.

"Mommy!" Isabella screamed as another grenade detonated in the hallway, filling the kitchen with black, choking smoke.

Vincent grabbed Carmen by the arm, dragging her up. "Can you run?"

"Yes... yes!" she choked out through the smoke.

"Take Isabella. Follow the narrow pantry hallway. There is a hidden service elevator behind the wine racks. Go down to the basement vault. Do not open it for anyone unless they say the words 'Black Velvet'. Do you understand me?"

"What about you, Mr. Torino?" Carmen asked, her eyes wide with terror as she clutched Isabella to her chest.

Vincent reloaded his pistol, his eyes burning through the haze. "I have to clean my house."

He pushed them through the pantry door, locking it from the outside. He stood alone in the burning kitchen, surrounded by the bodies of his fallen guards and the groaning form of the traitor Dominic. Outside, the heavy, coordinated footsteps of at least a dozen heavily armed Marcone hitmen were approaching the kitchen.

Vincent pulled a second magazine from his coat. He knew the odds were impossible. He was outnumbered, outgunned, and cornered in his own home. But as he looked at the blood on his suit—blood that belonged to a child's protector—he felt invincible.

The kitchen doors burst open. The first three hitmen poured in, weapons raised.

Vincent raised his guns, a dark, lethal smile spreading across his face. "Welcome to the Torino mansion."

HOOK FOR NEXT CHAPTER: Vincent successfully clears the kitchen in a brutal display of lethal precision, but as he searches Dominic's phone for the location of Carmen's kidnapped son, a live video broadcast plays automatically. The screen shows the basement vault of his own mansion—and a shadowy figure is already standing right behind Carmen and Isabella with a knife.
