Chapter 6 - A Home Built on ScarsThat evening, the penthouse suite felt different.

The cold, minimalist aesthetic—all glass, chrome, and obsidian surfaces that Julian had curated over a decade of lonely isolation—no longer felt like a fortress. It felt like a home.
Emily was sitting at the grand mahogany dining table, wearing a brand-new pink pajama set, carefully arranging a box of crayons across a blank sketchbook. Julian sat across from her, a stack of legal documents and federal asset seizure notices piled unread beside his laptop.
For the first time in his life, paperwork didn't interest him.
"Do you want to draw something with me, Julian?" Emily asked, holding out a yellow crayon with a tentative, hopeful smile.
Julian blinked, caught off guard. Nobody had called him by his first name without a title, a plea, or a demand in twenty years.
"I'm not very good at drawing, Emily," Julian admitted, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. "My drawings usually look like financial graphs."
"That's okay," she giggled, her grief momentarily overshadowed by the simple joy of childhood. "I'll teach you. You just have to hold the crayon like this—not too hard, or it breaks."
Julian reached out, his massive fingers gently curling around the small yellow wax stick alongside her tiny hand. He drew a clumsy, lopsided sun on the corner of the paper.
Suddenly, the secure intercom on the wall buzzed.
Julian’s expression hardened instantly. He pressed the speaker button. "Speak."
"Sir," his head of security’s voice crackled through, sounding tense. "We have an unexpected visitor in the private lobby downstairs. It’s... it’s Elena Vance. Your mother."
Julian froze. The room temperature seemed to drop twenty degrees.
Elena Vance. The matriarch of the family dynasty, a woman who had abandoned him when he was eight years old, trading her family for European society high-life and old-money inheritance. She hadn't spoken to him in fifteen years.
"Send her away," Julian said coldly.

"She says she knows about the child, Julian," the guard replied urgently. "And she says if you don't let her up, she’ll go straight to the family court and file an emergency guardianship injunction. She claims an unmarried, ruthless billionaire with a criminal investigation swirling around his clinic is legally unfit to raise an orphan."
Julian’s eyes flared with a lethal, blinding rage.
