Chapter 7 - The Bloodline WarThe private elevator chime dinged softly.

Elena Vance stepped out into the penthouse foyer with the calculated elegance of a queen entering a conquered province. She was seventy-two, draped in vintage Chanel, smelling of expensive French perfume and old money, with silver hair pulled back into a severe, flawless bun.

She took one look at the minimalist decor, then her cold, appraising eyes locked onto Julian standing at the entrance of the living room, his shoulders squared like a soldier bracing for impact.

"Julian," Elena said, her voice dripping with condescension. "You truly have a talent for theatrical disasters. First, you implode your entire medical corporation on national television, and now you’re playing house with a beggar's orphan?"

"Get out of my house, Elena," Julian said, his voice flat, devoid of any familial warmth.

Elena didn't flinch. She walked further into the room, her gaze drifting toward the dining table where Emily was quietly coloring, clutching Mr. Hugs.

"Look at her," Elena sneered softly. "A common street child. Do you have any idea what the tabloids are calling you right now? 'The Billionaire's Charity Trap.' If you legally adopt her, or even keep her here under your roof, the social services department will tear you apart. And our family name—what’s left of it—will be permanently dragged through the mud."

"I don't give a damn about the family name," Julian snarled, stepping directly into her path, towering over her. "You traded away any claim to this family thirty years ago when you walked out on me. You have no power here."

"I have every power, Julian," Elena smiled, her eyes flashing with calculated malice. "I have the best family lawyers in the country on retainer. I have federal judges who owe favors to the Vance estate. Within twenty-four hours, a court order will be issued placing that child in a state foster facility where she belongs. You cannot protect her from the real world, Julian. You are a predator, not a father."

Before Julian could erupt, a small voice broke the chilling silence of the room.

"Julian?"

Emily had slipped off her chair. She padded across the polished wooden floor, her oversized pajamas trailing behind her, and stood right beside Julian, wrapping her tiny arms around his leg. She looked up at Elena with wide, fearless gray eyes.

"He's not a predator," Emily said clearly, her voice steady and brave. "He's my friend. And he promised we’d find the cure together."

Elena stared down at the child, her expression contorting with sheer disgust. "Pathetic."

Julian didn't shout. He didn't lose his temper. Instead, a terrifying, calm smile touched his lips—the exact expression he wore right before he crushed a competitor's business empire.

"Elena," Julian whispered, leaning down so only she could hear. "You think your lawyers and judges can touch us? Try it. File your injunction tomorrow morning. Because the moment you do, I will release every single document regarding grandfather's offshore tax evasion and your personal involvement in the Horizon embezzlement ring to the Department of Justice. You’ll be sharing a prison cell with Marcus before the weekend."

Elena’s face drained of every drop of color. Her manicured hands trembled slightly against her handbag strap. She realized, with sudden, terrifying clarity, that the boy she had abandoned had grown into a monster far more ruthless than she could ever control.

"You're insane," she whispered.

"I'm protective," Julian corrected coldly. "Now, get out before I change my mind and send the files anyway."

Without another word, Elena turned on her heel and practically fled back toward the private elevator.
