Chapter 5 - The ConfrontationDaniel stopped dead in his tracks. He held up his hands, shaking his head.

“No. No, Amara, I didn't know. My grandmother… I swear to God, I had no idea she sent men here.” He took another step closer, his eyes searching her face. “When I went back to Yaba, your stall was gone. I’ve been searching for you every second of the last three weeks.”

Amara let out a bitter, heartbroken laugh.

“You wanted to test whether I could love a poor man,” she whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes. “You lied to my face every single day. You watched me worry about paying rent, watched me save every naira, while you owned half of Lagos in secret.”

“I was wrong,” Daniel confessed, his voice breaking as he closed the distance between them, falling gently to his knees in front of her. “I was a coward. I was afraid of the vultures in my family. But losing you… losing what we had… it destroyed me, Amara.”

Amara stared down at him. She saw the raw, genuine agony in his eyes. But then she straightened her shoulders, placing a protective hand over her lower abdomen.

“You think an apology fixes this?” she whispered coldly.

Daniel looked up at her, confused by the sudden shift in her posture.

“How many months?” Daniel whispered, his gaze dropping involuntarily toward her waist. “How far along are you?”

Amara looked straight into his eyes, her gaze unflinching, sharp as a blade.

“Don’t worry about months, Daniel,” she said softly. “Worry about the fact that there are three.”
