Chapter 3 - The Cryptic LedgerBefore Nicholas could strike, the lights in the sunroom flickered and died.

Emergency red grid-lights instantly flooded the ceiling, casting long, bloody shadows across the antique furniture. From the hallway came the sound of breaking glass—not from the outside, but from deep within the mansion's private panic room.
"What did you do, Thomas?" Nicholas demanded, grabbing the older man by the lapels of his wool vest and slamming him against the wood-paneled wall.
Thomas choked out a laugh, blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth. "I didn't survive forty years at the top by keeping all my secrets in one basket, Nicholas. The poison in your cup was a distraction. A test. The real asset... is already uploaded."
Marcus rushed into the room, his tactical tablet glowing in his hand. "Boss! We have a breach on our main server bank downtown. Someone is systematically downloading every hidden offshore account, every safehouse location, and every political payoff ledger we own."
Nicholas threw Thomas violently back into his chair. "Who?"
"Not who," Marcus said, his face pale under the red emergency lights. "It’s an automated sequence triggered by my heart monitor... or my death." Thomas wheezed, gasping for air. "If I don't punch the biometric override code into my office safe every twelve hours, the entire Philadelphia underworld is exposed to federal prosecutors and rival cartels alike."
Nicholas stared at the aging traitor. He realized with chilling clarity that Thomas wasn't just trying to kill him—he was trying to trigger a total systemic collapse of the entire criminal ecosystem, leaving himself or an unknown buyer as the sole survivor.
"The override code, Thomas," Nicholas whispered, pulling a Smith & Wesson from his shoulder holster and pressing the cold barrel directly against the center of Thomas’s forehead. "Give me the numbers."
Thomas smiled, blood staining his teeth. "You'll have to pry them from my cold, dead fingers, son. And by the time you do... the files will already be in Washington."
Bang.
The shot wasn't loud, muffled by the heavy drapes of the sunroom, but it echoed through the entire estate.
Thomas slumped sideways, his eyes wide and vacant, staring blankly at the Persian rug.
Marcus stared at Nicholas in shock. "Boss! If you killed him, the biometric lock will permanent-lock in ten minutes! We won't have the code!"
Nicholas didn't flinch. He reached down, grabbed Thomas’s stiffening right hand, and smiled grimly at the optical scanner embedded in the wall safe behind the desk.

"Thomas always was arrogant," Nicholas said, pressing the dead man's thumb against the digital pad while using his other hand to pry open the desk drawer. "He kept his passwords written down like an amateur."
Inside the drawer sat a heavy leather-bound journal, labeled simply: The Sterling-Vale Legacy.
