The marble of Nicholas Vale’s kitchen floor seemed to drop forty degrees as Elena Carter spoke. Outside, the Philadelphia rain began to lash the tall windows, matching the violent cadence of secrets unraveling in the dark. / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - Siege at the VaultThe forty-story Vale Financial Tower in downtown Philadelphia looked like a monolithic glass monolith against the stormy night sky. But tonight, the building was a war zone.

Federal SWAT vehicles surrounded the perimeter, their blue and red strobes painting the wet pavement in frantic flashes of color. Special Agent David Vance stood behind an armored command van, megaphone in hand, barking orders into the rain.

"This is Special Agent Vance! Surrender the building immediately! You are harboring international fugitives and terrorist assets!"

Inside the subterranean executive vault on the 38th floor, however, the atmosphere was entirely different.

Nicholas, Marcus, Elena, and a dozen loyal operatives stood around the central mahogany conference table. The walls of the vault were lined with high-security digital servers currently flashing amber alert warnings.

"They're bypassing our firewall," one of the tech specialists yelled over the hum of the cooling fans. "Vance’s team is using a military-grade decryption key. They’ll have access to the master database in five minutes!"

Nicholas remained completely calm. He pulled the leather-bound ledger from his bag and placed it squarely in front of Elena.

"The digital records can be hacked, Elena," Nicholas said quietly. "But this book is physical paper, signed in ink by your father and Thomas Warren. It contains the original routing numbers of every illicit asset they transferred out of your family's accounts."

Elena opened the book, her fingers tracing the faded handwriting of her father. "What do you want me to do?"

"Open the vault's manual broadcast system," Nicholas instructed Marcus. "Route the audio feed directly to every police radio frequency and federal band in the tri-state area."
