Chapter 4 - The Ghost of Sterling EstateBack at the Vale compound, the atmosphere had shifted from tension to high alert. The entire estate was locked down under maximum security protocol.

Elena sat in the massive, high-ceilinged library, rocking Lucy, who had finally drifted off into a deep, dreamless sleep. The heavy mahogany shelves towering above them felt like prison walls.
The oak doors swung open, and Nicholas walked in, his coat discarded, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He tossed the heavy leather ledger onto the glass coffee table between them.
"Your father kept meticulous records, Elena," Nicholas said, his voice dropping into a softer, more reflective tone than she had ever heard. "Every transaction, every meeting, every name involved in the betrayal twenty years ago. Including the signatures of the men who ordered the gas leak."
Elena looked down at the weathered leather book. Her fingers trembled as she reached out and touched the embossed gold lettering.
"He knew they were coming for him," she whispered. "That night... before the house blew up... my father handed me to our nanny and made her run through the woods. He stayed behind to buy us time."
"He bought you a life," Nicholas said, sitting down in the armchair opposite her. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Which means you weren't just hiding from random thugs all these years. You were waiting for the right moment to strike back."
Elena looked up, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce defiance. "I didn't know who to trust, Mr. Vale. Every time I got close to someone who had ties to the old syndicate, they wound up dead or disappeared. Coming to your house as a maid... getting locked in that laundry room... it wasn't an accident."
Nicholas narrowed his eyes. "Explain."
"I knew Daniel was nervous," Elena said calmly. "I saw him slip the vial into your coffee tray yesterday afternoon when he thought no one was looking. I couldn't warn you directly—your guards would have dragged me out before I could finish a sentence. So I waited for the exact moment when the risk was highest."
Nicholas stared at her, a slow, dangerous smile forming at the corner of his mouth. "You used your own child as an early warning system."
May you like
"I used my child to save both our lives," Elena corrected fiercely. "Because if you died this morning, Thomas Warren’s cleaners would have wiped out every remaining bloodline of the Sterling and Vale families by nightfall. Including mine."
Silence settled over the library, thick and heavy. For the first time, Nicholas Vale realized he wasn't looking at a helpless victim. He was looking at an equal.
