Chapter 4 - THE MIDNIGHT INTRUDERThe 92nd-floor penthouse was quiet, save for the rhythmic humming of the HVAC system and the soft, steady breathing of Titan sleeping outside Willa's bedroom door.

Willa sat on the edge of a massive, silk-sheeted king-sized bed that felt absurdly luxurious—almost alien—compared to the lumpy cot she was used to. She stared at the digital clock on the bedside table: 3:14 AM.
She couldn't sleep. Too much had happened. In less than twelve hours, her entire existence had been ripped apart and tossed into a blender. She was no longer just a struggling college dropout trying to pay for her mother's medical treatments; she was a guest—or a prisoner—in the lair of the most feared crime lord in America.
Click.
Willa froze.
It wasn't a loud sound, but in the dead silence of the penthouse, it echoed like a gunshot. It was the faint, mechanical click of a door latch lifting.
She slid off the bed, her bare feet making no sound on the thick wool carpet. Creeping toward the bedroom door, she gently pressed her ear against the wood.
"...she's in the master wing," a low, gravelly whisper floated down the hallway.
"Doesn't matter. Hayes wants her eliminated before sunrise. Can't have any loose variables messing with the syndicate council vote tomorrow."
A chill ran straight down Willa's spine. Assassins. Barrett Hayes hadn't wasted any time.
Panic threatened to swallow her whole, but survival instincts forged from a harsh life kicked in. There was no phone in the guest room—Kendrick had taken it or disabled it. The windows were bulletproof glass overlooking a 900-foot drop.
She needed a weapon.
Willa slipped back into the room, her eyes scanning the elegant, minimalist decor. Nothing. Just lamps, vases, and decorative sculptures. As she reached for a heavy marble bookend, a massive shadow suddenly blocked the doorway.
Willa gasped, throwing her hand over her mouth to stifle a scream.
Standing in the doorway was Titan. The 150-pound beast didn't bark. His amber eyes glowed dimly in the moonlight streaming through the window, fixed entirely on the hallway outside. The fur along his spine was standing straight up.

Without a sound, Titan stepped into the room, nudged Willa gently behind his massive shoulder with a heavy snout, and faced the door.
A gloved hand slowly turned the bedroom door handle.
