Chapter 1 - THE WEIGHT OF THE CROWNThe massive mahogany doors of the 88th floor grand hall closed with a heavy, final thud, sealing away the murmurs of the elite families like a vault door clicking shut. The glittering ballroom, moments ago a theater of ambitions and designer perfumes, now felt like an empty tomb.

Willa stood frozen, the silver tray in her hands feeling heavier than lead. The stains on her black apron suddenly burned against her stomach like acid.

"You can breathe now," a voice muttered.

Willa jumped, looking over to see Marcus, the head banquet manager, glaring at her with eyes wide with terror and fury. Marcus wiped sweat from his forehead with a stained linen cloth, his hands trembling violently.

"Do you have any idea what you've done, Willa?" Marcus hissed, stepping close enough for her to smell the stale coffee and cheap mints on his breath. "That was Barrett Hayes's hand-picked selection. Fifteen million-dollar bloodlines lined up for Ashford's protection pact, and you—a charity-case scholarship dropout working for minimum wage—you ruined it."

"I didn't do anything!" Willa whispered fiercely, her voice tight. "The dog came to me. The little girl pointed at me! What was I supposed to do? Push them away?"

"You should have disappeared!" Marcus snapped, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward the service corridor. "You should have slipped through the kitchen doors before Ashford even blinked. Now? Barrett Hayes is going to skin us both alive. Come on. We're going through the loading dock service elevator before they remember you're still breathing."

Before Marcus could drag her three steps, the heavy service doors flew open with a resounding crash.

Two men in slate-gray suits—men whose shoulders were broad enough to block the doorway and whose eyes scanned the room with cold, mechanical detachment—stepped into the hallway. They didn't look like banquet security. They moved with the terrifying, oiled precision of military executioners.

"Willa Hayes?" the lead guard asked. His voice was flat, devoid of human warmth.

Marcus instinctively thrust Willa behind him, raising his hands defensively. "S-sir, there's been a mistake! She’s just a server, a temporary hire! Take her wages, take the whole night's tips, we don't want any trouble—"

The guard didn't even look at Marcus. He raised two fingers, and a third operative stepped forward, gently but with inescapable strength, pulling Marcus aside as if he were a ragdoll.

"Chairman Ashford requests your presence in the private sky-lounge," the guard said, fixing his gaze squarely on Willa.

"I... I can't," Willa stammered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "I have to finish clearing tables. I have rent to pay—"

"You don't understand, girl," the guard interrupted, his tone chillingly polite. "When Kendrick Ashford requests your presence, you don't talk about rent. You just walk."
