Chapter 1 - THE CRASH AT THE GATES

The heavy porcelain teacup shattered against the marble tiles, the sound ringing through the tense air like a gunshot. Hot Earl Grey spilled across the immaculate balcony floor, staining the hem of Victoria’s cream silk gown. But she didn't care about the dress. She didn't even care that the servants were staring.

Her eyes were locked on the scruffy, nine-year-old boy standing in the middle of the driveway. His shoes had holes in the soles, his oversized jacket was filthy, and his knuckles were scraped raw.

"Check the lines," Arthur Vance cold-naturedly ordered his head mechanic, his voice cutting through the thick silence. Arthur was a self-made billionaire, built like an oak tree, with cold gray eyes that had terrified boardrooms across Wall Street for three decades. He stepped out of the back of the Maybach, his posture imposing.

The mechanic, a veteran named Thomas, crawled under the luxury sedan with a flashlight. Seconds stretched into agonized eternity. When Thomas pulled himself out, his face was pale as chalk. He looked up at Arthur, then glanced nervously at the balcony.

"The hydraulic brake lines... they've been sliced clean through, Mr. Vance," Thomas whispered, his voice trembling. "If you had taken the mountain pass to the summit meeting today... you would have lost total control at 80 miles an hour. You wouldn't have survived."

Arthur didn't flinch. Slowly, he turned his head and looked up at the balcony.

Victoria's lips parted, but no sound came out. The effortless, aristocratic charm she had cultivated for six years as the second Mrs. Vance evaporated in a single second.

"How did you know?" Arthur asked, turning his gaze down to the homeless boy.

The boy wiped his nose with a dirty sleeve, trembling not from fear, but from the freezing morning wind. "I... I was sleeping behind the hedge near the east wing last night," he stammered. "A man in a black hoodie met a woman near the side door. I heard them talking. He said, 'The cut is done. Make sure he takes the mountain route tomorrow.' Then the woman gave him an envelope full of cash."

"What did the woman look like?" Arthur asked, stepping closer to the boy.

"She... she was wearing a diamond necklace shaped like a serpent," the boy said softly. "And she smelled like white roses."

Every servant in the courtyard gasped. Victoria's hand involuntarily flew to her throat, where a 20-carat diamond serpent necklace glistened under the sun. White rose was her signature perfume—a custom scent imported exclusively for her from Paris.

"Leo," Arthur called out to his head of security. "Seal the estate. Nobody leaves. Call the authorities."

"Arthur! Darling, wait!" Victoria screamed, abandoning all composure as she rushed down the grand dual staircase. "He's a lying brat! Look at him! He's a dirty street rat trying to shake you down for money! I was in bed all night! You know me!"

"I thought I did," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. He walked over to the young boy and knelt down in the dirt, unbothered by the grease smearing his ten-thousand-dollar bespoke suit. "What's your name, son?"

"Toby," the boy whispered. "Toby Miller."

"Well, Toby," Arthur said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a heavy gold signet ring, placing it in the boy's small, dirt-caked hand. "You just saved my life. And in this house, debts are paid in full."

Arthur stood up, his eyes turning to ice as he looked at his wife. "Take her to the study. Lock the door from the outside."

May you like

"You can't do this to me!" Victoria shrieked as two security guards grabbed her slender arms. "I am your wife! I am the co-owner of Vance International!"

"Not anymore," Arthur said coldly.
