Chapter 7 - THE TWIST IN THE MIRROR

Arthur rushed into the library, shotgun raised, ready to kill anyone in his way—only to freeze dead in his tracks at the scene before him.

Victoria lay unconscious on the carpet, bleeding heavily. Toby was sobbing, wrapped tightly in the arms of a woman Arthur had buried in his heart fifteen years ago.

"Clara...?" Arthur gasped, the shotgun slipping slightly in his grip. "How... you died! Toby said you died in a hospital!"

Clara stood up slowly, keeping Toby behind her. Her gaze turned to Arthur, sharp and unyielding.

"I had to make him believe I was dead, Arthur," Clara said, her voice smooth and dangerous. "It was the only way to keep him safe from them."

"From who?" Arthur asked, completely bewildered. "What are you talking about?"

"From the organization that raised you, Arthur," Clara revealed, stepping forward. "You think you're just a self-made billionaire who got lucky in finance? Vance International was funded thirty years ago by the Syndicate—a global shadow network that uses men like you as fronts to launder illegal arms capital."

Arthur’s breath hitched. "No... that’s impossible. I built this company from scratch!"

"With loans from 'angel investors' that your brother Julian arranged," Clara corrected firmly. "Julian wasn't trying to take your money, Arthur. He was trying to pay off a debt to the Syndicate before they wiped out the entire Vance bloodline! Victoria wasn't working for Julian... she was sent by the Syndicate six years ago to monitor you. When you made Toby your legal heir, you put a giant target on his back!"

Suddenly, the unconscious Victoria groaned on the floor. She let out a wet, breathless laugh, blood pooling around her lips.

"She's... she's right, Arthur..." Victoria wheezed, her eyes rolling back. "You... you were never the mastermind. You were just... the trophy..."

Outside, the distant wail of police sirens finally cut through the night sky. The remaining mercenaries retreated into the woods, knowing the tactical assault had failed.

Arthur stood in the ruined library, looking at the woman he once loved, the son he just found, and the crumbling foundation of everything he believed he owned.

"If the Syndicate wants my son," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying dark resolve, "then I will burn down every single entity they own."

Clara smiled faintly—a lethal, satisfied grin. "That's why I came back, Arthur. I brought the codes."
