Chapter 8 - Betrayal in the Dark

The ambush was over in forty seconds. Grimm moved like a silent storm, pinning the lead courier to the concrete before the man could even draw his weapon. Nina stepped out of the shadows, her pistol raised, stripping the encrypted burner phones from their pockets with practiced efficiency.
"Got them," Nina spoke into her mic.
There was a brief, unnatural pause on the other end of the line. Then, instead of Lorenzo’s voice, a cold, unfamiliar chuckle crackled through the earpiece.
"Impressive, little bird," a smooth, accented voice purred. "Too bad your boss won't be around to collect them."
Nina froze. "Who is this?"
"Viktor Rostov," the voice replied smoothly. "And right now, your dear friend Lorenzo Castellano is entertaining my entire strike team at his private estate. The penthouse is falling, Nina. And so is your new life."
The earpiece went dead.

Nina’s blood turned to ice. She looked down at Grimm. The dog’s ears flattened against his skull, a low, savage growl rumbling in his throat as if he, too, could sense the betrayal echoing through the network.
"They set us up," Nina hissed, grabbing the burner phones and sprinting toward the exit. "Come on, boy. We're going home."
