Chapter 10 - The EpilogueThree months after my return to Madrid, the Boston corporate scandal had become a quiet footnote in industry trade journals.

Apex Consulting Group had quietly dissolved following the withdrawal of its primary licenses, and Vanguard Solutions had restructured its entire Northeast division after an internal audit uncovered widespread financial irregularities. Rachel Moretti had resigned under a cloud of professional disgrace, her career in corporate development effectively finished before it had truly begun.
As for Daniel, I heard through an old colleague that he had moved back in with his parents in Ohio, working a low-level administrative job in regional logistics—a position remarkably similar to the one he had once mocked me for holding.
I stood on the wide stone balcony of my grandfather’s Madrid estate, the warm autumn wind rustling the leaves of the ancient olive trees in the courtyard below.
The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the Spanish sky in brilliant shades of gold, violet, and deep crimson.
My phone rang on the patio table beside my glass of Rioja wine. I picked it up, seeing my grandfather’s name flashing on the screen.
"Dime, Abuelo," I answered, smiling as I leaned against the stone railing.
"Elena, querida," my grandfather’s voice boomed through the speaker, rich with amusement and pride. "Arthur Pendelton just sent over the final sign-offs for the Latin American energy grid integration. He said the regional risk assessment you drafted is a masterpiece."
I looked out over the sprawling city lights of Madrid, stretching endlessly toward the horizon.

"Tell Arthur he hasn't seen anything yet," I said softly, switching effortlessly between the language of my past, my present, and my absolute future.
The ghosts of Boston were gone. The silence was broken. And for the first time in five years, every word I spoke belonged entirely to me.
