Chapter 5 - The UnravelingThe silence in the boardroom was so heavy you could hear the faint hum of the overhead air conditioning vents.

Daniel slowly sank back into his leather chair, his hands gripping the armrests so tightly his knuckles turned chalk white. His mouth opened and closed once or twice like a fish out of water, but no sound came out.

Rachel sat frozen beside him, staring at me as if she were seeing a ghost for the very first time. The mask of polished corporate confidence had completely shattered, leaving behind two terrified amateurs who had just realized they were swimming in an ocean populated by sharks.

"Go on, Elena," Arthur prompted gently, gesturing toward the screen.

I tapped my tablet, advancing the slide to display a detailed financial and legal breakdown.

"As you can see on the display," I began, pacing slowly toward the center of the room, "Proposal SR-9942-B relies on three major fabrications. First, the supply chain clauses on page eighteen utilize a regulatory loophole that was struck down by the European Trade Commission eighteen months ago. Any company operating under these terms would face immediate international sanctions."

I tapped the screen again, bringing up a side-by-side comparison of signatures and corporate accreditations.

"Second, the primary signature block bears the name of Daniel Vance, claiming the title of Lead Project Director. Under corporate charter guidelines, an associate of Mr. Vance’s standing cannot authorize Tier-1 cross-border liability without a verified senior partner sign-off." I turned my gaze directly onto Daniel, who refused to look me in the eye. "A sign-off that was neither requested nor granted by Apex Consulting Group."

A murmur rippled through the executive panel. One of the vice presidents leaned forward, adjusting his glasses to study the documents closely.

"And third," I continued, my voice ringing clear and steady across the room, "the financial projections submitted in Section C are inflated by nearly four million dollars, relying on shell partnerships that trace directly back to Vanguard Solutions' secondary accounts—specifically managed by Ms. Rachel Moretti."

Rachel flinched violently at her name, shrinking back into her chair.

"In short," I concluded, looking back at Arthur Pendelton, "this proposal isn't just non-compliant. It is an act of corporate fraud designed to misappropriate Sariah Renewables' development funds and secure fraudulent promotions through illicit collusion."

Arthur slowly stood up from his chair, buttoning his suit jacket. He looked at Daniel and Rachel with an expression of profound, chilling disgust.

"Mr. Vance, Ms. Moretti," Arthur said coldly. "You are both suspended from your respective firms, effective immediately, pending a full internal fraud investigation. Security is waiting outside to escort you from the building. Do not attempt to access your corporate emails or network portals, or federal charges will be filed before the end of business today."

Daniel didn't move. He sat motionless in his chair, staring blankly at the polished mahogany table as if his entire reality had dissolved into mist.

Two burly security guards in dark suits stepped quietly through the side doors of the conference room. They didn't make a scene; they simply walked over, placed their hands gently on Daniel and Rachel’s shoulders, and guided them toward the exit.

As Daniel passed me on his way out, he finally lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot, desperate, and filled with a pathetic, pleading terror.

"Elena..." he whispered, his voice trembling on the edge of a sob. "Please... we can talk about this. At home. Please..."

I looked down at him, my expression completely devoid of pity, anger, or warmth.

"There is no home, Daniel," I said softly in Spanish, letting the rich, native cadence of my mother tongue wash over him for the very first time. "And you forgot to check if I could understand you."
