Chapter 9 - The New HorizonMadrid in September smelled of roasted chestnuts, damp cobblestones, and the sweet, fading heat of a Mediterranean summer.

The private car dropped me off at the wrought-iron gates of my grandfather’s estate in Puerta de Hierro. The massive oak doors swung open before I even had time to ring the bell, and my grandfather’s arms were there to catch me, holding me tight against his chest with the fierce, unconditional love I had missed for over a decade.

"Bienvenida a casa, mi vida," he whispered, kissing both of my cheeks as we stood in the grand marble foyer. "You look like your mother tonight."

"I missed you, Abuelo," I murmured, burying my face against his shoulder for a brief, grounding moment.

Two days later, I sat at the head of the polished glass conference table on the top floor of Sariah Renewables' European headquarters.

The room was filled with regional directors, international supply chain strategists, and elite trade lawyers from London, Frankfurt, and Paris. As the newly appointed Managing Director of European Risk and Compliance, I didn't need to prove my authority with loud voices or arrogant posturing.

My name, my credentials, and my pedigree spoke volumes before I even opened my mouth.

"Let's begin," I said in crisp, elegant Spanish, looking around the table at the gathered executives.

As I laid out the new cross-border expansion protocols for the upcoming fiscal year, my phone buzzed quietly beside my tablet.

I glanced down at the screen, seeing an unknown Massachusetts number pop up on the banner, followed by a voicemail notification. I didn't touch it. I swiped the notification away, silenced the device, and turned my complete, undivided attention back to the room.

Across the Atlantic, Daniel Vance was currently packing his remaining belongings into a cheap motel room, facing civil lawsuits, blacklisted credentials, and a mountain of corporate debt he could never hope to pay back. He had tried to play a high-stakes game of manipulation, believing he was the master strategist while everyone else was merely a pawn.

He had underestimated the woman sitting across from him at dinner.

He had underestimated the language she carried in her bones.

And most of all, he had underestimated what happens when you finally stop hiding your power to make someone else feel tall.
