Chapter 8 - The DepartureSaturday evening arrived with a heavy, golden sunset that painted the Boston harbor in shades of amber and rose.

My packing was already finished. Two sleek leather suitcases sat by the entryway, tagged for a direct first-class flight to Madrid Barajas International Airport. The condo was completely empty of my presence—every trace of my books, my art, and my life carefully boxed and shipped ahead of me.

My phone sat on the kitchen island, purged of every mutual acquaintance, every toxic colleague, and every ghost from the past five years.

There was no lingering sadness in my chest. Only a vast, beautiful, terrifying sense of freedom.

I walked through the silent rooms one last time, running my hand along the polished quartz countertops. I remembered the night Daniel had stood right here and told me that love wasn't a business transaction, while secretly calculating how much he could squeeze out of my inheritance.

He had tried to turn my life into a ledger.

He had simply forgotten to check who held the pen.

My Uber pulled up to the curb downstairs, its horn giving a soft, polite beep through the evening air.

I picked up my carry-on bag, walked out the front door, and locked it behind me for the very last time. I dropped the set of keys into the metal trash chute in the hallway—letting them fall with a dull, distant clatter into the bin below.

As the elevator descended to the ground floor, I watched the digital numbers tick down from thirty-two to one.

When the doors opened, the cool evening air of Boston welcomed me outside. I slid into the back of the waiting car, gave the driver the address for Logan International Airport, and watched the city skyline recede in the rearview mirror.

My mother’s language—the language of my childhood, my grief, and my strength—echoed softly in my mind, a warm reminder of who I had always been.

Ya voy a casa, Abuelo, I whispered to myself, leaning back against the leather seat as the car merged onto the highway toward the open sky.
