Chapter 1 - The Masterclass of a Psychopath

The Performance of a LifetimeDoña Victoria threw open the front door just as two police officers sprinted up the porch steps, their flashlights cutting through the evening gloom. The transformation was instantaneous. The cold, calculating matriarch vanished, replaced by a sobbing, fragile grandmother.
“Help me, please! Officers, thank God you’re here!” Victoria wailed, collapsing slightly against the doorframe, her manicured hand clutching her chest. “My son… he’s suffering from severe combat psychosis! He’s armed, he’s deeply unstable, and he’s holding his pregnant wife hostage inside! He’s trying to kill us!”
The officers immediately drew their firearms, their postures tensing into tactical formation. “Ma’am, step away from the door and get behind us right now!” the lead officer commanded.
Inside the kitchen, my heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I looked at Alejandro. His face remained an unreadable mask of military discipline, but I could see the vein pulsing violently in his jaw. He didn't flinch. He didn't run. He gently placed his hand over mine, squeezed it once to anchor me, and then stepped out of the kitchen, his hands raised at shoulder height, completely cooperative but entirely unbothered.
“Officers, lower your weapons,” Alejandro said, his voice ringing with the absolute authority of an Army Captain. “I am Captain Alejandro Vargas. I am the homeowner, and I am the one who placed the 911 call. The woman outside is my mother, Victoria Vargas, and she is currently attempting to cover up a crime scene.”
The officers blinked, caught off guard by his sheer composure and the undeniable presence of a military officer. The lead cop, Officer Miller, glanced between Alejandro’s dust-covered uniform and Victoria’s hysterical tears.
“He’s lying! Look at his eyes, he’s delusional!” Victoria shrieked from the yard, her voice carrying across the neighborhood. Several neighbors were already recording on their phones from across the street. “He’s been reported dead for months! He’s an impostor, or he’s completely lost his mind! Look at what he did to the kitchen! He tried to burn his own wife with an iron!”
The Evidence SpeaksOfficer Miller stepped into the house, his weapon lowered but his hand still resting on his holster. “Captain Vargas, I need you to stay exactly where you are. Sir, we received a call regarding an attempted murder. What is going on here?”
Alejandro didn't argue. He simply pointed a single, steady finger toward the dining table.
“Officer, I returned home unexpectedly tonight from a blackout deployment overseas to find my eight-month-pregnant wife terrified, trapped in a chair, with a scorching hot clothing iron left running on the floor next to her,” Alejandro explained, his voice chillingly level. “Furthermore, if you look at the table, you will find a forged military casualty notice—a federal offense—used to convince my wife I was dead, alongside a stack of fabricated medical records designed to legally declare my wife mentally incompetent.”
Officer Miller walked over to the table, his partner keeping a watchful eye on Victoria, who had suddenly stopped sobbing. Her eyes darted wildly as Miller picked up the forged military letter and the stack of "paranoia" notes.
“This letter has a forged Department of Defense seal,” Miller muttered, his eyes widening as he realized the gravity of the situation. He looked down at the floor, seeing the hot iron still plugged in, a faint scent of singed tile lingering in the air.
“She did that,” I whispered, my voice trembling as I finally found my strength. I looked at Officer Miller, my hands still cradling my pregnant belly. “Victoria brought the iron into the kitchen. She told me that if I didn't sign the voluntary custody transfer papers tonight, she would make sure I had a 'tragic accident' before the baby was born. She told everyone I was crazy so no one would believe me.”
Victoria’s face drained of color. The carefully crafted mask of a grieving mother began to crack, revealing the monster underneath. “That is a lie! Elena is delusional! She’s projecting her own sickness onto me!”
“Enough, Ma’am,” Officer Miller snapped, turning around to face Victoria. “We need to look at the security cameras. Captain, do you have a home security system?”
A dark, victorious smile finally touched Alejandro’s lips. It was the smile of a predator who had just sprung his trap.

“I do,” Alejandro said softly. “And unlike the system my mother thought she deactivated this afternoon, my military-grade backup feed uploads directly to an encrypted cloud server. Every single second of her threatening my wife with that iron is recorded. Officers, would you like to watch the video?”
Victoria gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. For the first time, she realized she hadn't just lost the game—she had walked straight into a firing squad.
