Chapter 3 - The Secret Society of the Elite

The High-Society WebThe betrayal cut deeper than a knife. Major General Vance wasn't just Alejandro’s superior officer; he was the man who had mentored Alejandro, the man who had recommended him for the elite captaincy, and a man who had dined at our table multiple times.
“Vance,” Alejandro breathed, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. “He was the one who assigned me to the blackout deployment. He specifically chose me for a mission where all satellite and radio communications were completely severed for six months. He sent me away on purpose.”
“Exactly,” Marcus nodded. “He cleared the field so your mother could isolate Elena. With you presumed dead or unreachable, and Elena legally declared insane, Victoria would have gained full guardianship of your child and, more importantly, full control over your late father’s multi-million dollar trust fund, which can only be accessed by a direct heir. If you died, and Elena was incompetent, Victoria controlled the money through your child.”
I looked at the photos on the table, feeling a cold dread settle deep in my bones. We weren't just fighting a bitter mother-in-law. We were fighting a syndicate of high-society elites, a corrupt military general, and a prominent medical professional.
“What do we do?” I asked, looking up at Alejandro, terrified. “They have so much power. Victoria is probably already out on bail.”
As if on cue, Alejandro’s phone buzzed. He answered it, listening silently for a few seconds before hanging up. His face was grim.
“You’re right,” Alejandro said, looking at me. “My mother’s high-priced lawyers just secured her release on a technicality. The judge ruled that the home security footage was an 'invasion of privacy' because she didn't consent to being recorded in a private residence where she frequently stayed. She’s out. And she just filed an emergency petition for temporary custody of our unborn baby, claiming I am a hazard due to PTSD.”
My heart plummeted. “How can she do that?! She tried to burn me!”
“Because in the eyes of the high-society elite, a decorated General and a prominent doctor carry more weight than an Army Captain and a woman with a mountain of fabricated medical issues,” Alejandro said, his eyes flashing with a cold, calculated brilliance. “They want to play dirty? Fine. We stop playing by their rules.”
The Counter-AttackAlejandro spent the next forty-eight hours locked in his study, coordinating with a network of loyal soldiers from his unit who owed him their lives. If the chain of command was corrupt at the top, he would bypass it entirely.
On Tuesday morning, a massive surprise headline hit the local news, but it wasn't about Victoria’s arrest. It was a leaked, high-definition video posted anonymously across all social media platforms.
The video didn't show the iron incident. Instead, it was a hidden microphone recording from Dr. Sterling’s private office, captured by Marcus the previous day. In the audio, Dr. Sterling could be heard clearly talking to Victoria on a burner phone:
“Victoria, the dosage of the medication I’m giving Elena is high enough to cause mild hallucinations and extreme fatigue. She’ll fail any psychiatric evaluation the court orders. Just make sure the remaining $100,000 hits my account before the delivery date.”
The internet exploded. Within three hours, the video had over five million views. The hashtag #JusticeForElena began trending nationwide. Public outrage was instantaneous, and the medical board was forced to suspend Dr. Sterling’s license immediately pending a federal investigation.
But our victory was short-lived.

That afternoon, while Alejandro was at the courthouse meeting with a federal prosecutor, the power to our house suddenly cut out. The security system went dead.
I was alone in the living room when the glass of the back door shattered.
