Chapter 2 - The Snake in the Grass

The Arrest and the AftermathThe look on Victoria’s face when the handcuffs clicked around her wrists was something I would cherish for the rest of my life. She didn't scream or cry anymore. Instead, she glared at me with a hatred so pure it felt like a physical weight in the room.
“You think you’ve won, Elena?” she hissed as Officer Miller escorted her toward the police cruiser. “You’re nothing. You’re a penniless orphan. Everything Alejandro has belongs to my family. I will be out of jail before the sun comes up, and when I am, I will take that child from your cold, dead hands.”
“Get in the car, Ma’am,” the officer barked, shoving her into the backseat. The door slammed shut, cutting off her vitriol.
As the police cars drove away, the flashing lights fading into the darkness, the silence returned to our home. But it wasn't the suffocating silence from before. It was the silence of survival.
Alejandro turned to me, the rigid military posture instantly dissolving. He dropped to his knees in front of my chair, wrapping his arms around my waist and burying his face against my pregnant stomach. I felt his shoulders shake. The stoic Captain was gone; he was just a husband who had almost lost everything.
“I’m so sorry, Elena,” he choked out, his voice thick with raw emotion. “I’m so sorry I wasn't here. They cut our communications. It was a deep-cover extraction mission in a hostile zone. I had no idea she had done this to you. I thought you were safe with her.”
I ran my fingers through his dust-caked hair, tears finally spilling freely down my cheeks. “She told me you were dead, Alejandro. She showed me the letter. She took my phone, she blocked my friends, she cancelled my doctor appointments… she wanted to drive me insane so she could legally adopt our baby.”
Alejandro pulled back, his eyes burning with a lethal fire. “She will never touch you or our child again. I don't care if she’s my mother. To me, she is nothing but a criminal.”
A Treacherous DiscoveryThe next morning, Alejandro’s legal team arrived at the house, alongside a private investigator he had hired the moment he landed back on American soil. We sat in the living room, drinking coffee, trying to piece together how deep Victoria’s deception truly ran.
“It’s worse than we thought, Captain,” the private investigator, a gruff retired detective named Marcus, said, laying out a thick manila folder on the coffee table. “Your mother didn't act alone. A plot this elaborate—forging military casualty documents, manipulating medical records—requires inside help.”
Alejandro narrowed his eyes. “Who helped her?”
Marcus pulled out a photograph of a man in a white lab coat. My breath hitched when I saw his face. It was Dr. Charles Sterling, my OB-GYN. The man who had been handling my high-risk pregnancy for the last eight months.
“Dr. Sterling?” I gasped, my hands shaking. “But… he was always so kind to me. He was the one who kept telling me I needed to rest, that my blood pressure was dangerously high, and that I shouldn't leave the house.”
“He was gaslighting you, Elena,” Marcus said gently. “We checked his bank statements. Over the last six months, Victoria Vargas transferred a total of $250,000 into an offshore account registered in Dr. Sterling’s name. In exchange, he was writing fake medical reports stating you were suffering from severe prenatal psychosis and postpartum depression risks. He was setting the legal groundwork for Victoria to strip you of your parental rights the moment the baby was born.”
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. The very doctor I trusted with my baby’s life was actively helping my mother-in-law steal him.
“But that’s not all,” Marcus continued, looking directly at Alejandro. “We traced the source of the forged military casualty notice. It didn't come from a street hustler. It was printed using a high-clearance military network. Someone inside the base at Fort Bragg helped your mother fake your death.”
Alejandro stood up so fast his chair flew backward. “Who?” he demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

Marcus dropped one final photo on the table. It was a picture of a man in a full military dress uniform, standing next to Victoria at a high-society charity gala.
It was Major General Arthur Vance—Alejandro’s commanding officer and Victoria’s longtime family friend.
