Chapter 3 - The Eviction Notice

While the executive suite at Vance Manufacturing plunged into absolute pandemonium, another drama was unfolding three miles away on the manicured lawns of our family estate.
The guesthouse was small, tucked away behind the main house near the overgrown rose garden. For six years, it had been my sanctuary, my office, and my armor. To my family, it was a symbol of my failure—a place where the "unemployable daughter" lived out of charity.
At 10:15 AM, a heavy knock echoed against the wooden front door.
Melissa, Daniel’s wife, stood on the porch holding a designer handbag in one hand and a smartphone in the other. She had come over to rifle through my kitchen for leftover party food, expecting to find me moping in a messy room.
Instead, the door swung open to reveal two uniformed county sheriff’s deputies and a tall, sharp-eyed woman in a tailored gray pantsuit—Naomi Brooks.
Melissa blinked, her aristocratic expression twisting into sheer confusion. "What is this? Who are you? Where is Claire?"
Naomi stepped past her without waiting for an invitation, holding a laminated legal document. "Are you Melissa Vance? Spouse of Daniel Vance?"
"Yes, but—"
"This property, including the main estate and the auxiliary guesthouse, was transferred out of Arthur Vance’s personal estate at 11:59 PM on Saturday," Naomi stated evenly, her voice cutting through the morning air. "The deed was held as collateral against a private bridge loan issued to Arthur Vance in 2021. That loan has been called due, and foreclosure proceedings are completed."
Melissa let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "Are you out of your mind? My father-in-law owns this house! He built this estate thirty years ago!"
"Not anymore," one of the deputies interjected, stepping onto the porch. "Ma'am, you have thirty minutes to collect your personal belongings and vacate the premises. The locks are being changed immediately."
Panic flared in Melissa’s eyes. She pulled out her phone, dialing frantically. "Daniel! Daniel, pick up your phone! Some crazy woman is here with the cops saying we’re being evicted from the house!"

On the other line, Daniel’s voice came through as a panicked, hysterical screech. “Forget the house, Melissa! Claire owns the company! Claire owns everything! We’re bankrupt! We’re completely ruined!”
The phone slipped from Melissa’s trembling fingers, hitting the stone pathway with a sickening crack. Her mouth opened, but no words came out. She stared at Naomi in absolute disbelief as the reality of Saturday night’s punchline crashed down around her.
