Chapter 2 - The Secrets Buried in the Soil

⚠️ THE DARKEST TRUTH REVEALED: The Terrifying Reason Why Baby Mateo Was Left to Die in a Ditch 25 Years Ago! ⚠️The reunion inside the modest adobe house was filled with tears, but outside, a storm was brewing. Mateo’s security team had quickly set up a perimeter around the property, refusing to let Filemón or his thugs anywhere near the threshold.
"We need to get him to a hospital, sir," Dr. Silva, a private medical professional Mateo had brought from Mexico City, whispered as he finished checking Don Elías’s vitals. "His lungs are heavily congested, and his heart is weak from years of untreated physical strain. He cannot stay in this dusty environment."
Mateo sat by his father’s bedside, holding a cup of warm broth. "We will move him to the private clinic in Oaxaca City tonight. But first, there are things that must be settled here."
Don Elías reached out, his frail hand grasping Mateo’s sleeve. "Mateo... do not seek vengeance, my son. God has blessed us. You are a successful man now. Let Filemón have the land. We can leave together."
Mateo looked out the small, cracked window of the adobe home. Outside, the village of San Marcos was quiet, but he knew the shadows held deep secrets.
"It’s not just about the land anymore, Father," Mateo said softly. "While I was studying in Mexico City, and later when I went to Germany for my master’s degree, I didn't just study engineering. I investigated. I investigated my own past."
Don Elías’s eyes widened. "What do you mean?"
"I always wondered how a newborn baby, wrapped in a clean shawl, ended up in a ditch at the edge of your property," Mateo explained, his eyes turning cold. "A roadside ditch isn't where a desperate, poor mother leaves her child. It’s where someone tries to make a body disappear."
Mateo stood up and walked to the door, calling in his lead investigator, a sharp-faced man named Carlos. Carlos handed Mateo a thick, leather-bound folder.
"Father, do you remember the old hacienda that used to sit on the northern ridge of San Marcos? The one owned by the Ramirez family?"
Don Elías nodded slowly. "Of course. Don Aurelio Ramirez. He was a good man. He wanted to build a school here. But twenty-five years ago, he and his wife died in a tragic fire. The hacienda burned to the ground. After that, Filemón bought up all their lands for pennies."
"It wasn't an accident," Mateo said, slamming the folder onto the wooden table. "The Ramirez family was murdered. And they had a newborn son. A son whose birth certificate was registered just three days before the fire. A son named Mateo."
The revelation hung in the air like a heavy fog. Don Elías gasped, his hand flying to his mouth.
"Filemón didn't just steal their land," Mateo continued, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and rage. "He tried to murder the heir. He paid a local hand to throw the baby into the ravine during the storm, hoping the cold and the mud would wash the evidence away. But he didn't count on one thing."
"He didn't count on me," Don Elías whispered, tears flowing freely.
"He didn't count on the stubbornness of a saint," Mateo corrected, kneeling back down by his father. "You saved my life, Father. Not just from the trash, but from a killer. And now, the killer wants this specific plot of land. Do you know why?"
Before Elías could answer, Carlos stepped forward. "Sir, our geological surveys of Don Elías’s land are complete. It’s exactly as you suspected. The southern boundary of this property contains the primary access point to a massive underground water aquifer—the only clean water source left in this drought-stricken region. If Filemón controls this land, he controls the entire valley's survival."

"But that's not all," Carlos added, his voice dropping to a tense whisper. "We also found something else buried near the old well on the edge of the property. Human remains. From twenty-five years ago."
THE CLIFFHANGER: Just as Carlos spoke those words, the window of the adobe house shattered! A brick wrapped in a burning rag crashed onto the floor, filling the room with thick, black smoke as sirens began to wail in the distance!
