Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last Strike

🗝️ THE SECRET OF THE WELL: The Dead Watchman Left Behind One Final Weapon That Could Destroy a Billion-Dollar Corporation! 🗝️The intensive care unit of the top private hospital in Oaxaca City was dead silent. Mateo stood outside the glass window, watching the doctors work tirelessly to stabilize Don Elías. After several grueling minutes of CPR and defibrillation, they had managed to bring his heartbeat back, but he remained in a deep coma, hooked up to a ventilator.
"He is stable for now, Mateo," Dr. Silva said, placing a comforting hand on the young man's shoulder. "But his body is exhausted. The next forty-eight hours will decide everything."
Mateo nodded slowly, his face hardened like stone. "Carlos."
His investigator stepped out of the shadows of the hospital corridor. "Yes, boss?"
"Go back to San Marcos. Take a specialized team. I want the old well dismantled piece by piece. My father said there is a key buried there. Find it."
"Right away, sir."
Two hours later, Mateo’s phone buzzed. It was Carlos.
"Mateo, we found it," Carlos’s voice was filled with disbelief. "It wasn't a physical key. It was a metal lockbox buried directly beneath the watchman’s remains. Inside is a sealed, waterproof leather pouch. It contains the original deeds to the entire valley, signed by the federal government eighty years ago, along with a handwritten diary by your biological father, Aurelio Ramirez."
Mateo gripped the phone tightly. "What does the diary say?"
"It details everything. Aurelio knew Filemón was planning to kill him. But more importantly, Aurelio discovered that the valley doesn't just have water. The aquifer sits on top of one of the largest untapped lithium deposits in North America. Filemón wasn't working alone. He was backed by a multinational mining conglomerate based in Canada. They wanted to evict the entire village, poison the water table to extract the lithium, and make billions."
Mateo’s blood ran cold. This wasn't just a local land dispute. It was a massive, corporate conspiracy that had claimed his biological family's lives—and was now threatening his adoptive father's home.
"And there's one more thing, Mateo," Carlos added, his voice shaking. "Filemón is gone."
Mateo’s eyes narrowed. "What do you mean, gone? He was arrested by the federal police!"
"The transport convoy was ambushed on the highway to Oaxaca City. A group of heavily armed mercenaries killed two officers and broke Filemón out. The Canadian conglomerate... they are cleaning up their loose ends. They rescued him, or rather, they took him to get their hands on the deeds."
Suddenly, Mateo’s phone beeped with an incoming call from an unknown, encrypted number.
He put Carlos on hold and answered the new line.
"Mateo," a raspy, blood-chilled voice laughed from the other end. It was Filemón. "Did you think your fancy suits and federal friends could save you? I may be a fugitive, but I still have friends in very high places."
"Where are you, Filemón?" Mateo asked, his voice deadly calm.
May you like
"I am exactly where this all began," Filemón hissed. "At the ruins of your parents' hacienda. I have your little investigator's team surrounded. If you want them to live, and if you don't want me to send my men to slip a needle into your precious adoptive father's IV line at the hospital... you will bring the lockbox to me. Alone. No police, no security. Just you and the papers."
THE CLIFFHANGER: "You have one hour, Mateo," Filemón sneered. "Let's see if the boy from the trash has the guts to face the man who put him there."
