Chapter 1 - The Trap Door Closes

Thomas Bennett’s fingers grew ice-cold against the steering wheel. The document in his hand wasn't just a standard eviction notice. It bore the red, aggressive seal of Vanguard Property Holdings—a ruthless real estate conglomerate he knew intimately. In fact, Thomas had negotiated their restructuring strategy just last year.

He stared at the address listed for the eviction. It wasn’t a cheap apartment complex. It was a historic suburban home, the kind a proud young family bought to build a lifetime of memories.

"Rebecca," Thomas said, his voice dropping an octave, losing all of its previous warmth. "Why didn't you tell me it was Vanguard?"

Rebecca snatched the paper back, her face flushing crimson with a mixture of shame and sudden defensiveness. "Because it doesn't change anything, Mr. Bennett. It’s my burden. We have twenty-four hours to vacate. I’ve already packed the essentials into the stroller and a few suitcases."

"No, you don't understand," Thomas said, pulling the luxury SUV to the curb. The rain began to lash against the windshield again, blurring the streetlights into bleeding halos of amber and red. "Vanguard doesn't expedite evictions within twenty-four hours unless there is a corporate seizure order. Who was David’s captain at the fire department?"

Rebecca blinked, startled by the sharp pivot. "Captain Marcus Vance. Why?"

Thomas’s heart hammered against his ribs. Marcus Vance was the cousin of Vanguard’s CEO. Suddenly, the puzzle pieces of Rebecca’s sudden downfall began to click into a sinister, calculated pattern. David hadn't just died in a routine fire. The building that burned down belonged to a shell company owned by Vanguard.

Before Thomas could speak, Rebecca’s phone buzzed violently in her lap. It was an unknown number. She answered, putting it on speaker so she could keep an eye on Lily and Emma sleeping in the backseat.

A cold, modulated voice echoed through the car's speakers.

"Rebecca Carter. We see you’re riding in style tonight. But remember, a millionaire’s charity won't save what your husband hid. You have until midnight to hand over the flash drive from the station locker, or the eviction will be the least of your worries."

The line went dead.

Rebecca gasped, clutching Flopsy—whom Lily had dropped between the seats—to her chest. Inside the stuffed rabbit's newly stitched ear, Thomas felt something hard and rectangular.

Mrs. Chen hadn't just repaired the rabbit. She had hidden something inside it.

The Chapter 1 Hook: Thomas sliced open the freshly sewn seam of Flopsy’s ear. Slipping out from the cotton stuffing wasn't a flash drive, but a blood-stained silver key with a microchip embedded in the bow. And etched onto the metal were the coordinates to Thomas Bennett’s own private bank vault.
