"Get the children out of here, Thomas," Mrs. Chen said, her voice completely devoid of the sweet, grandmotherly tone she had used in the shop. She held the weapon with the terrifying precision of a seasoned black-ops veteran.

"Mrs. Chen... who are you?" Rebecca asked, shielding her daughters' eyes from the carnage.

"I was David’s handler when he worked for Intelligence," Mrs. Chen replied coldly, keeping her eyes locked on a wounded, groaning Marcus Vance. "When David discovered that Vanguard was funding a shadow syndicate run by your brother, he knew he couldn't trust the police. He brought me the key, disguised as a toy repair. I’ve been watching over you since the day David died, Rebecca."

Sirens wailed in the distance. The short-circuit had finally triggered an automated federal alert.

"The FBI will be here in five minutes," Mrs. Chen said, tossing Thomas a encrypted satellite phone. "Vanguard has moles in the local precinct. If you stay here, the narrative will be twisted. They’ll frame you for Robert’s murder and seize the Carter assets permanently under corporate eminent domain. You need to disappear, tonight."

Thomas looked at Rebecca, then at Lily, who was still clutching the torn, empty Flopsy rabbit. The millionaire had spent his entire life building a fortress of legal protection, wealth, and respectability. But looking at this family, he realized that true security wasn't something you bought—it was something you fought for.
