Chapter 4 - The Sixty-Second Gambit

The air inside the vault was designed to last for twenty-four hours, but Marcus Vance had bypassed the ventilation system. A thick, sweet-smelling gas began to hiss through the ceiling vents.

"Carbon monoxide," Thomas muttered, his analytical brain kicking into high gear despite the panic roaring in his chest. "We have less than three minutes before the children lose consciousness."

Rebecca didn't scream. She didn't cry. The years of surviving on the edge had hardened her. She grabbed the heavy steel box of Project Phoenix and slammed it against the reinforced glass window. It didn't even scratch.

"Thomas, think!" she screamed, holding Lily and Emma close to her chest as the girls began to cough. "You know every contract loop, every security flaw! How do we get out?!"

Thomas stared at the silver key still inside the secondary lock console. The microchip. It wasn't just a keycard access chip; it was an active transmitter. David Carter hadn't just been a firefighter; he had been a military communications specialist under Robert's command before he realized Robert’s corruption.

"The chip doesn't just open the door," Thomas realized aloud. "It’s a dead-man's switch."

Thomas grabbed a heavy gold pen from his pocket, jammed it into the auxiliary power slot of the console, and violently twisted the silver key past its breaking point. The microchip shattered, sending a high-voltage short-circuit directly into the vault's mainframe.

The electronic locks blew out with a shower of blue sparks. The massive door popped open an inch.

Thomas threw his body weight against the door, shoving it open just as Robert and Vance turned the corner, believing their job was done.

A brutal, chaotic struggle ensued in the dim corridor of the vault facility. Vance lunged for Rebecca, but she swung her heavy leather folder—filled with the sharp, metallic binder clips of her organized life—directly into his eyes. Vance yelled in agony, dropping the detonator.

Thomas tackled his brother into the concrete wall. "Why, Robert?! You were my brother! I broke down when you went missing!"

"You got rich while I fought in the dirt!" Robert spat, his eyes wild with decades of jealousy and malice. "Vanguard belongs to me! The Carter fortune belongs to me!"

Robert drew a concealed pistol, aiming it directly at Thomas’s chest.

The Chapter 4 Hook: A loud bang echoed through the concrete bunker. But it wasn't Thomas who fell. Robert gasped, looking down at a neat, blooming circle of red on his pristine white shirt. He collapsed forward, revealing Mrs. Chen standing at the end of the hallway, a smoking suppressed pistol in her frail, elderly hands.
