Chapter 3 - The Bloodline Contract

The revelation shattered Thomas’s calculated worldview. His brother, the boy he had mourned for twenty years, was alive and working in the shadows of the corporate underworld.

"We can't go to the pier," Thomas said, his mind racing through contingency plans. "It’s a kill zone. We go to the vault. If whatever is in that vault is valuable enough for Robert to betray his own blood and murder a firefighter, it’s our only leverage."

Using his private security detail as a decoy, Thomas smuggled Rebecca and the children through the estate’s underground service tunnels. By midnight, they stood deep beneath the city in the high-security vaults of Aegis.

Thomas inserted his primary key, and Rebecca inserted the silver key hidden inside Flopsy. With a heavy hydraulic hiss, the massive titanium door swung open.

Inside wasn't gold or stacks of cash. It was a single, dusty cardboard box labeled: PROJECT PHOENIX.

Thomas opened it and pulled out a binding legal contract dated thirty years ago—the very contract that had launched Thomas’s career and made him a multi-millionaire. But as he turned to the final signature page, he froze.

The primary shareholder wasn't Thomas Bennett. The original founder, who had provided 100% of the initial capital, was David Carter’s grandfather. Thomas had merely been hired as a young trustee to manage the funds. But after a tragic "accident" tore the Carter family apart three decades ago, the records were falsified, and Thomas was led to believe the capital had come from an anonymous offshore investor.

"I didn't steal your family's fortune, Rebecca," Thomas said, his voice shaking with genuine horror. "I was lied to. I was set up to be the public face so someone else could skim billions from the shadows."

"Who?" Rebecca demanded, tears streaming down her face as she realized her family’s generations of poverty were a manufactured lie.

Before Thomas could answer, the lights in the vault clicked off.

The heavy titanium door began to swing shut, locking them inside the airtight room. Through the reinforced glass window of the vault door, a figure emerged from the darkness. He wore a tailored suit, but his face bore the severe burn scars of a man who had escaped a roaring inferno.

It was Robert Bennett. And standing right beside him, holding a detonator, was Captain Marcus Vance.

The Chapter 3 Hook: Robert smiled through his scars, pressing a microphone button to speak through the vault's intercom. "You always were a brilliant strategist, Thomas. But you forgot the golden rule of contracts: always read the fine print. I didn't come for the key. I came to seal the last witnesses of the Carter bloodline inside their own tomb. Say goodbye to the children, Rebecca."
