Chapter 2 - The Vanishing Patient

Viral Hook: "She was breathing ten minutes ago. Now, her bed is empty and the cameras are wiped."Two hours later, the police had arrived, but the situation had taken a frustrating, bureaucratic turn. Because of Arthur Vance’s immense political influence, the responding officers were treating the incident as a "misunderstanding regarding a surrogacy dispute" rather than a kidnapping. The stroller had been impounded temporarily, and baby Lily was placed in the neonatal ward under high security.
Claire sat in a private breakroom with Leo, who was wrapped in a warm blanket, quietly eating a sandwich. His eyes were wide with a trauma no seven-year-old should ever experience.
"Leo," Claire whispered, kneeling in front of him. "I need you to tell me exactly what your mommy said to you before they took her."
Leo swallowed hard, his little hands gripping his knees. "Mommy said... the monster found us. She said he changed his name and became rich, but he came back to take what was his. She told me to take Lily's bassinet and run to the lobby where there are people. She said, 'Don't let Arthur touch her.'"
Claire froze. Don't let Arthur touch her.
Leo didn't know Arthur Vance's name from the news. His mother knew him personally.
Realizing the danger they were in, Claire stood up to check on Clara Miller in the Intensive Care Unit. But when she reached Ward 4, the glass doors to Room 412 were wide open. The room was stripped bare. The sheets were gone. The monitors were turned off.
"Where is Clara Miller?" Claire demanded, grabbing a floor nurse.
"Who?" the nurse asked, confused. "Room 412 has been vacant since this morning. It's scheduled for deep cleaning."
"No, she was brought up here two hours ago! Pushed by Dr. Harrison himself!" Claire’s voice rose in panic. She rushed to the central desk, pulling up the electronic medical records on the terminal. She typed in Clara Miller.
ERROR: RECORD NOT FOUND.
The entire digital existence of Clara Miller, her delivery, her admission, and her children had been completely erased from the hospital database. It was as if she had never walked through the doors.

Just then, a heavy hand clapped down on Claire’s shoulder. She turned around to face Dr. Harrison, his expression grim and menacing.
"Nurse Bennett," he said softly, his voice dripping with venomous authority. "You've had a very long shift. You're exhibiting signs of severe exhaustion and paranoia. I suggest you clock out immediately. If you speak another word about this 'missing patient,' I will have your nursing license permanently revoked before sunrise."
