Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Jacket

Viral Hook: "They offered me five million dollars to walk away. That's when I knew the baby wasn't just an adoption—she was a weapon."Claire knew she couldn't leave Leo and Lily. If she walked out of the hospital, those children would disappear into the Vance empire forever. Pretending to comply, she packed her bag, grabbed Leo under the guise of taking him to a social worker, and instead hid him in a decommissioned storage closet in the basement laundry wing.

"Stay here, Leo. Do not make a sound," she instructed.

As she adjusted the oversized denim jacket wrapped around the boy, something hard crinkled inside the lining. Claire frowned, reaching into the hidden inner pocket of the jacket. She pulled out a small, old-fashioned, battered digital voice recorder and a bundle of legal documents bound by a rubber band.

With trembling fingers, Claire clicked the 'Play' button on the recorder. Through the static, a woman’s terrified, breathless voice filled the dark storage closet.

"My name is Clara Miller. If anyone is listening to this, it means Arthur Vance has found me. Eight years ago, before he changed his identity and married the billionaire heiress Eleanor Vance to secure her family's fortune, he was married to me. We never legally divorced. Leo is his son. This baby girl I am carrying is his biological child. He needs an heir because Eleanor’s father left a clause in his will: If Arthur and Eleanor do not produce a biological child within ten years of marriage, the entire multi-billion-dollar Vance inheritance reverts to a charitable trust. Eleanor is infertile. They faked her pregnancy. They came to steal my baby to pass her off as Eleanor’s birth child to secure the fortune... and they plan to kill me to keep the secret."

Claire gasped, covering her mouth. The documents weren't medical records—they were a certified marriage certificate between Clara Miller and a man named Arthur Pendelton, featuring a photo of a younger, pre-plastic surgery Arthur Vance!

Suddenly, the heavy metal door of the storage closet flew open.

Arthur Vance stood in the doorway, flanked by two private bodyguards. The light from the hallway cast a long, demonic shadow across the room.

"I knew you wouldn't just leave, Claire," Arthur said, stepping into the room, a sinister smile playing on his lips. "You have that annoying, self-righteous savior complex."

He held up a briefcase. "There is five million dollars in cash in this bag. It's yours. You take it, you leave the state, and you forget you ever saw a boy named Leo or a baby named Lily. If you refuse..." He nodded toward his bodyguards, who drew silenced pistols from their jackets. "...you will join their mother in the incinerator."
