Chapter 4 - The Midnight Run

Viral Hook: "The billionaire thought he owned the hospital. He forgot that the nurses know where the emergency exits are.""Where is Clara?" Claire asked, her voice shaking, secretly sliding the digital recorder into her scrub pocket while keeping her hand behind her back.

"Let's just say she's receiving a permanent sedative," Arthur sneered. "Now, give me the boy, give me whatever documents Clara gave him, and take the money. Don't be a hero, Claire. Heroes die broke."

Leo whimpered, squeezing Claire's waist. Claire looked down at the brave little boy, then up at the corrupt billionaire.

"You're right," Claire said, dropping her head as if surrendering. "I can't fight a billionaire."

She stepped forward, pretending to reach for the briefcase. But instead of grabbing the handle, Claire grabbed a heavy canister of industrial grade liquid bleach from the laundry shelf right next to her and hurled it directly into the face of the nearest bodyguard.

"RUN, LEO!" she screamed.

The bodyguard blinded by the chemicals shrieked in agony, firing his weapon blindly. The bullet ricocheted off the metal washing machines. Claire grabbed Leo’s hand, slammed the heavy metal door of the laundry room shut, and threw the manual deadbolt, locking Arthur and his men inside.

They ran through the maze of the hospital basement. Claire knew every corridor, every service elevator, and every blind spot in the security cameras that Dr. Harrison hadn't managed to manipulate.

She needed to get to the Neonatal ICU on the third floor, grab baby Lily, and get out. But as they burst into the service elevator, the PA system crackled to life. Dr. Harrison’s voice echoed through the entire facility.

"Attention all staff. Code Silver. An unstable nurse, Claire Bennett, has abducted a child from the lobby and is armed and dangerous. Lock down all exits. Stop her at all costs."

Claire’s heart dropped. They had turned the entire hospital against her. She was now a wanted fugitive in her own workplace.
