Chapter 3 - THE RAT FLEES THE SHIPBy noon, the illusion of the Sterling dynasty had evaporated like morning mist over the Appalachians.

The local radio station—owned by Charles—was broadcasting a mandatory automated loop of federal receivership notices. The town council chambers were sealed with federal padlocks. Across Sterling Falls, families who had lived in fear of foreclosure by Sterling Valley Finance woke up to text messages informing them that their mortgages had been seized by the federal government and placed into a relief trust.

Inside the grand parlor of the Sterling estate, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Charles paced back and forth, slamming his fist into his palm. "This is a mistake! A political hit job! I’ll call the governor—I funded his entire primary campaign!"

"The governor’s office isn't taking your calls, Charles," Evelyn snapped, her voice trembling for the first time in thirty years. She sat rigidly in an antique armchair, clutching a string of pearls so tightly the silk thread threatened to snap. "I tried three state senators. Their secretaries hung up on me."

Jaxson slumped against the marble fireplace, trembling. "Where is Miranda? Where is my sister?"

As if summoned by his words, the heavy front doors didn't just open—they were kicked wide off their reinforced hinges with a deafening crash.

Four armed federal marshals poured into the foyer, weapons drawn, securing the perimeter in synchronized, terrifying silence. Behind them walked First Sergeant Marcus Vance. He wasn't wearing his field combat gear; he wore his Class-A dress uniform, every medal gleaming under the crystal chandelier.

Behind Marcus stood sixteen-year-old Brooke—Jaxson’s daughter—holding a secure digital tablet against her chest. Her eyes were red from crying, but her jaw was set with unyielding defiance.

"You!" Rowan snarled, lunging forward off the sofa. "You miserable military trash, you think—"

A federal marshal stepped forward, the butt of his sidearm catching Rowan squarely in the solar plexus. Rowan collapsed to his knees, gasping for air like a dying fish.

"Rowan Sterling, Jaxson Sterling, and Charles Sterling," Marcus’s voice cut through the room like a razor blade, cold and measured. "You are hereby placed under arrest for interstate racketeering, conspiracy, child abuse, and financial fraud."

"You can't do this!" Charles screamed, stepping toward Marcus with a face twisted in rage. "You're a nobody! You're an enlisted peasant! I built this town!"

Marcus didn't flinch. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and tapped the screen.

The audio filled the silent parlor, echoing off the high ceilings: "I heard you’re back in town, soldier boy... My boys are completely protected... Rowan says that if you dare to come looking for him, he’ll finish what he started with her."

Evelyn turned a terrifying shade of pale.

Marcus stepped closer, towering over the patriarch of the fallen empire. "You threatened my daughter. You thought distance and local corruption were a shield. But you forgot one fundamental rule of engagement, Evelyn: when a beast attacks a soldier's cub, the soldier doesn't fight dirty. He brings the full weight of the United States government down on its head."
