Chapter 4 - THE WITNESS IN THE SHADOWSThe arrest of the Sterling men was broadcast live on every regional news network. Townsfolk who had spent decades hiding their bruises, swallowing their silence, and walking on eggshells poured out onto the streets of Sterling Falls, openly weeping and cheering as Charles, Rowan, and Jaxson were shoved into the back of separate federal vans in heavy steel handcuffs.

Sheriff Landry was taken away in a separate patrol car, his badge stripped and tossed onto the floorboards.

That evening, the grand estate was completely empty of its masters. Only federal investigators remained, boxing up paper shredder bins, hard drives, and ledgers.

In the guest house out back, Brooke sat on the edge of a twin bed, staring out the window at the flashing blue lights of the federal blockade. A soft knock echoed at the wooden door.

"Come in," she whispered.

Marcus pushed the door open, stepping inside with two cups of hot tea. He placed one on the nightstand beside her and sat quietly in a wooden chair.

"You didn't have to send that encrypted drive, Brooke," Marcus said gently, breaking the silence. "The financial audits alone were enough to put them away for decades."

Brooke looked up, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "They broke her arm, Uncle Marcus. Lily is nine years old. She dropped a soda. It was an accident. And my dad... my dad laughed while he did it." She buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking. "And my aunt Miranda... she just stood at that window and watched. She closed the curtain so she wouldn't have to hear the screaming. I hated them. I hated what they did to this town. But I was too cowardly to say anything until you showed up."

Marcus reached out, placing a warm, calloused hand over her trembling fingers. "You aren't a coward, Brooke. Courage isn't the absence of fear. It’s doing what is right when the entire world tells you to look away. Your cousin Lily is going to be safe. And you are going to college far away from this valley."

Brooke looked up, wiping her eyes. "Where is Miranda? The marshals didn't arrest her with the others."

Marcus’s expression hardened, a shadow crossing his eyes. "Miranda’s warrant was processed separately. She isn't charged with financial fraud or racketeering."

"Then what is she charged with?" Brooke asked, her breath catching.

"Aiding and abetting aggravated felony child abuse, conspiracy to commit murder, and witness intimidation," Marcus replied coldly. "And right now, Sarah and David are tracking her signal. She thinks she can run. But she’s running into a trap."
