Chapter 1 - THE WOLF AT THE GATESThe morning sun filtered through the imported French glass of the Beverly Hills mansion, casting long, geometric shadows across the pristine marble floor. Where shattered china and spilled red wine had stained the dining room the night before, a team of private cleaners had already scrubbed away every trace of violence. To the outside world, the Cross estate was an oasis of untouchable perfection.

Inside, however, the air was thick with the suffocating pressure of a ticking time bomb.
I sat at the head of the mahogany table, nursing a cup of black coffee. Across from me, Adrian looked like a ghost of the billionaire he pretended to be. His bespoke Brioni suit was immaculate, but his hands trembled slightly as he lifted his porcelain cup. The bravado, the roaring, the arrogant display of dominance from last evening had evaporated into thin air, replaced by the gnawing terror of a man who realized he had kicked a live grenade thinking it was a stone.
"She’ll be here in twenty minutes," Adrian muttered, his voice hollow. He didn't dare look me in the eye. "Camryn’s driver just texted. She’s leaving her Holmby Hills estate now."
"Good," I replied calmly, setting my cup down with a sharp clack. "I hate waiting."
"Elena, please," Adrian pleaded, leaning forward, abandoning any lingering pretense of pride. "You don't understand how my mother operates. She’s not just wealthy; she has judges, senators, and district attorneys on speed dial. If you go to war with her, she won't just ruin you—she will erase you. She’ll frame you for corporate espionage, plant things in your background, twist your CID record..."
"My CID record," I interrupted, my voice as cold as ice, "is spotless, classified, and protected by federal mandates that even your mother’s corrupt friends can't touch. Adrian, look at me."
He flinched, finally raising his eyes.
"You thought you married a trophy wife you could gaslight and control," I continued, standing up slowly. The simple movement made him recoil. "You thought my silence was weakness. But every single threat you uttered last night—every admission about how your mother coached you to systematically dismantle my life—is backed up by a pristine audio file currently sitting on a secure, cloud-synced server managed by my former unit."
Adrian’s face drained of the last remaining drop of color. "What... what do you want?"
"I want front-row seats," I said, buttoning the cuffs of my tailored blazer, "while I dismantle the matriarch who thinks she owns the world."

Before Adrian could answer, the deep, resonant chime of the front gate echoed through the grand foyer.
Camryn Cross had arrived.
