Chapter 7 - The Midnight RaidThree days later, the rain poured over the city in violent, blinding sheets.

Inside the penthouse, the atmosphere was warm and peaceful. Norah and Hazel were curled up on the living room rug, safely tucked under thick wool blankets, watching a cartoon on the television while drinking warm chamomile tea.

Grant sat at the kitchen island, reviewing architectural plans for a new children's wing he was funding at the city hospital—naming it in honor of Elena.

Ding-dong.

Grant frowned, glancing at the wall clock. It was 11:45 PM.

Before he could stand up, the private elevator chime chimed loudly.

Clunk.

The secure override doors slid open.

Stepping out of the elevator wasn't Marcus Cole or the estate security team. It was a squad of four municipal child welfare officers flanked by two armed city marshals in tactical gear, led by a stern-faced woman holding a heavy clipboard.

Norah and Hazel screamed in terror, dropping their mugs and scrambling backward against the sofa, hiding their faces in their hands.

Grant exploded out of his chair, rage surging through his veins like liquid fire. He crossed the kitchen in three massive strides, blocking the path to the living room.

“What the hell is the meaning of this?!” Grant roared, towering over the lead officer. “How did you bypass my security perimeter?!”

The female officer flashed a laminated badge and a court-signed document.

“Mr. Grant Whitmore? By order of the municipal family court and emergency petition filed by guardian trustee Eleanor Whitmore, we are executing an immediate state seizure of minors Norah and Hazel Whitmore due to falsified guardianship records and unregistered custody!” the officer declared coldly.

“This is complete bullshit! That court order is fraudulent!” Grant shouted, lunging for the document, but the two armed marshals immediately stepped forward, placing their hands firmly on their holstered firearms.

“Step back, Mr. Whitmore, or you will be arrested for interfering with a federal court order!” the marshal warned.

From the corner of the room, Norah began to sob hysterically, reaching out her small hands toward Grant.

“Daddy! Don't let them take us! Please, Daddy!” Norah cried out.

The word Daddy hit Grant right in the center of his soul, shattering every restraint he had left.

“Don't you touch them!” Grant snarled, his muscles tensing as he prepared to take down both marshals bare-handed, regardless of the consequences.

Before fists could fly, the elevator chimed again.

Ding.

The doors slid open.

Stepping out of the elevator, leaning heavily on a silver-handled cane, was Eleanor Whitmore. Behind her stood Julian Vance, holding a secure recording device, and Marcus Cole—who was currently holding two zip-tied local security guards by their collars.

Eleanor surveyed the chaotic scene with a look of supreme, chilling triumph.

“It’s over, Grant,” Eleanor said softly, walking slowly across the polished hardwood floor. “You cannot fight the law. You cannot fight me. The girls are coming back with me where they belong.”
