CHAPTER 7 — The Face Behind "The Architect"

For nearly twenty years...
Federal agents had chased a ghost.
Every investigation ended the same way.
Witnesses disappeared.
Evidence burned.
Informants died before trial.
One name surfaced again and again—
The Architect.
No fingerprints.
No photographs.
No confirmed identity.
Most investigators eventually believed he was nothing more than a myth created by organized crime.
But Raven slowly pushed a faded photograph across the interrogation table.
Emma picked it up.
It showed a charity gala from fifteen years earlier.
Dozens of politicians and wealthy donors smiled for the cameras.
Nothing unusual...
Until Emma noticed one man standing in the back.
Not smiling.
Not posing.
Simply watching everyone else.
Judge Harrison's face turned pale.
"I know him."
The room went silent.
"Who is he?"
The judge swallowed hard.
"His name isn't on any government record anymore."
"He officially died eleven years ago."
"But before that..."
"...he served as a senior advisor inside the Department of Justice."
The room exploded with disbelief.
Someone inside the justice system had spent decades building the very criminal empire he was supposed to destroy.
Emma looked at Raven.
"How do you know him?"
Raven leaned back.
"I never met him."
"I only heard his voice."
"Every order came through encrypted phones."
"But once..."
"...I saw his reflection in a prison office window."
She pointed at the photograph.
"That's him."
Federal agents immediately launched the largest manhunt in years.
Airports.
Private airfields.
Border crossings.
Luxury yachts.
Every possible escape route was locked down.
But by the time agents raided the mansion connected to the photograph...
It was empty.
Coffee still sat warm on the kitchen table.
A television was still playing.
Security cameras had been erased exactly seven minutes before the raid.
Emma quietly walked through the silent house.
Something felt wrong.
The Architect had expected them.
Then she noticed a chessboard in the study.
Every piece was perfectly arranged.
Except one.
The black king had been removed.
In its place...
A small handwritten note.
"You're finally asking the right questions."
Emma folded the note into her pocket.
"This isn't over."
"It's just becoming personal."
Meanwhile, back inside Graystone Prison...
An explosion ripped through the underground evidence tunnel.
Fire roared beneath the prison.
Concrete collapsed.
Smoke filled every corridor.
Someone had just destroyed the largest collection of evidence in the entire investigation.
Or so they thought.
Emma calmly smiled.
Because every document had already been digitally copied...
Forty-eight hours earlier.
The Architect had destroyed only empty shelves.
May you like
For the first time...
Emma had outplayed him.
