Chapter 2 - No Safe Harbor

"Open the door, Mara," the man holding the landlord commanded, his voice muffled by the thick wood.

Mara didn't hesitate. She threw her phone under the couch, grabbed her keys, and slipped through the narrow window of her bathroom, dropping into the fire escape just as the front door was kicked off its hinges with a deafening splintering crash.

She heard the landlord scream, followed by the terrifyingly muffled thud of a suppressed firearm. They were leaving no witnesses.

Mara scrambled back through her bedroom window, grabbed Lucian’s dead-weight arm, and hauled him toward the back fire escape. The adrenaline gave her a strength she didn't know she possessed. Lucian groaned, his consciousness flickering back as his boots scraped against the iron grating of the fire escape.

"They're... here," he rasped, his eyes bloodshot.

"Shut up and move," Mara hissed, guiding him down the slippery metal stairs into the pouring rain.

They reached the alleyway just as headlights illuminated the wet asphalt. Another patrol car. Mara dragged Lucian into the shadows behind a row of industrial dumpsters. She could hear the heavy thud of combat boots descending the fire escape above them. They were trapped.

"Give me... the piece," Lucian whispered, reaching into his inner coat pocket. He pulled out a sleek, matte-black Glock, but his hand was shaking so violently he could barely hold it straight.

Mara took the weapon from his hands. She had never fired a gun in her life, but looking at the men closing in, she knew what would happen if they were caught. Sebastian wouldn't just kill Lucian; he would make an example out of her to ensure no one else ever dared to aid the fallen king.

The lead enforcer rounded the corner of the dumpster, his flashlight beam cutting through the darkness. The light hit Mara’s eyes.

"Found them," the man shouted into his radio.

Before he could raise his weapon, Mara squeezed the trigger. The recoil slammed up her arm, and the deafening roar of the gunshot echoed through the narrow alley. The bullet caught the man square in the chest, throwing him backward onto the wet pavement.

"Drive!" Lucian growled, pointing toward an old, beat-up sedan parked at the end of the alley—a car belonging to Mara's neighbor who always left the keys under the sun visor.

Mara hotwired the car with frantic speed, slamming the gas pedal down just as bullets began to punch holes through the rear windshield. The car fishtailed out of the alley, leaving the silver thorns behind in a cloud of burning rubber and exhaust.

The Hook: As they sped away into the stormy night, Lucian’s phone—which he had kept hidden in his boot—began to ring. The caller ID read: The Warehouse District - Secure Line 4. It was the private bunker where Lucian kept his emergency reserves. But as Mara answered it, a voice that wasn't a loyalist spoke: "We knew you'd go for the car, brother. Welcome to the trap."
