Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The tension in the penthouse was thick enough to suffocate. Lucian stood in front of Mara, shielding her from the weapons aimed at them.
"It’s over, Sebastian," Lucian said coldly. "I’ve sent the data to the heads of the five major families. They know you sold out Port Aurelia to the Russians. The syndicate will hunt you to the ends of the earth."
Sebastian laughed, a loud, psychotic sound that echoed through the luxurious penthouse. "You think the families care about loyalty, Lucian? The Russians offered them a three hundred percent increase in profit margins. They already signed off on your death. I didn't betray the family. I evolved it."
Lucian’s eyes widened slightly—a rare show of shock from the unflappable mob boss. He had been fighting for a code of honor that no longer existed.
"And as for you, Mara," Sebastian said, turning his sinister gaze toward her. "You played your part beautifully. The perfect scapegoat."
Sebastian signaled his guards to fire.
But before a trigger could be pulled, the lights in the entire hotel went completely black.
A deafening explosion rocked the lower floors. The floor beneath them shook violently. Screams echoed from the ballroom below.
In the pitch-black darkness, gunfire erupted. Mara dropped to the floor, covering her head as muzzle flashes illuminated the room in strobe-like bursts. She heard the grunts of dying men and the unmistakable sound of Lucian's brutal hand-to-hand combat style.
When the emergency backup lights flickered on, glowing a deep, ominous red, the four guards were dead on the floor. Lucian was standing over Sebastian, his hands wrapped tightly around his brother's throat, pinning him against the floor-to-ceiling glass window that overlooked the burning city.
"Please... Lucian... we're blood," Sebastian choked out, his face turning purple.
Lucian looked down at his brother, his eyes cold and devoid of any human emotion. "You wore the silver thorn, Sebastian. You know the penalty for treason."
With a roar of effort, Lucian lifted Sebastian and slammed him against the glass. The heavy window cracked, then shattered completely into thousands of glittering shards. Sebastian Vale fell from the seventy-story penthouse, disappearing into the dark, rainy abyss of Port Aurelia below.
Lucian turned to Mara, his breathing heavy, his suit soaked in fresh blood. He held out his hand to her. "It’s over. We need to leave before the city burns."
Mara looked at his outstretched hand. She looked at the dead guards. She looked at the shattered window.
Then she smiled—a cold, calculating smile that didn't belong to the girl who worked six nights a week at a bar.
She reached into her evening bag, pulled out a small, silenced pistol—one she had taken from the enforcer she knocked out earlier—and pointed it directly at Lucian's chest.
"You're right, Lucian. It is over," Mara said softly.
Lucian froze, his eyes narrowing. "Mara? What are you doing?"
"You thought Sebastian was the mastermind?" Mara laughed, the sound sweet yet utterly chilling. "Sebastian was an idiot. A loud, greedy child. He was so easy to manipulate. I was the one who approached the Russians. I was the one who told Sebastian how to ambush you."
Lucian stared at her, the pieces of the puzzle finally falling into place. The way she had perfectly survived every ambush. The way she had known exactly how to hotwire that car. The way she had adapted so quickly to the violence.
"Why?" Lucian rasped.
"Because you killed my father ten years ago during your rise to power," Mara said, her eyes flashing with a decade’s worth of buried fury. "I changed my name. I took a job at your club. I waited. And tonight, I used your own brother to destroy your empire, and I used you to destroy your brother."
Mara squeezed the trigger.
The bullet struck Lucian square in the chest. He stumbled backward, his eyes locked onto hers in sheer disbelief as he tipped over the edge of the shattered window, falling into the same dark void as his brother.
Mara walked to the edge, looking down at the chaotic streets below. She adjusted her dress, picked up the flash drive containing the keys to the multi-billion-dollar empire, and walked out of the penthouse.

And Mara Ellis? She vanished from Port Aurelia forever, leaving only the shadow of the woman who had single-handedly erased the most feared mafia family in history.
