Chapter 4 - Shadows and Sirens

The cabin door blasted inward, shattered by a tactical breaching charge. High-powered flashlights blinded Mara as heavily armed men in tactical gear swarmed the room.
"Get down on the ground! Now!" a voice boomed.
Malakai raised his shotgun, but a burst of automatic gunfire cut him down before he could even chamber a shell. He fell to the deck, his blood pooling around Mara’s boots.
Mara screamed, ducking behind the steel kitchen counter as bullets tore the cabin to shreds. In the chaos, Lucian surged awake, fueled by pure adrenaline. He grabbed the fallen captain's shotgun, rolled out from the bunk, and fired twice into the tactical team, blowing the front two men backward through the shattered doorway.
"Move, Mara!" Lucian roared, his face contorted in agony as his stitches tore open.
They ran out onto the rain-slicked deck. The harbor was crawling with flashing blue lights and black tactical vans. There was no escape by land.
"Jump!" Lucian commanded, pointing toward the churning, black water of the bay.
"I can't swim well!" Mara shouted over the wind.
"I’ve got you," Lucian promised, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that burned through her fear. "Trust me."
They leaped together just as a hail of gunfire chewed through the ship's railing. The freezing water hit Mara like a physical blow, knocking the air from her lungs. The current was fierce, dragging her down into the darkness. She felt herself losing consciousness, the light from the surface fading away.
Then, a strong arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her upward.
When Mara finally broke the surface, coughing up salt water, she found herself beneath a low concrete pier. Lucian was dragging her onto a hidden wooden platform used by smugglers. He was pale, gasping for air, his wound bleeding profusely into the ocean.
They crawled into a hidden drainage pipe that led deep under the city's streets. They were shivering, freezing, and entirely stripped of resources.
"Why did Sebastian do this?" Mara asked, her teeth chattering as they leaned against the damp brick wall of the tunnel. "You gave him everything."
Lucian let out a hollow, bitter laugh. "Sebastian didn't want the corporate side. He wanted the throne. He made a deal with the Bratva—the Russian syndicate. They want Port Aurelia's shipping lanes for human trafficking. I refused. Sebastian didn't."

He looked at Mara, a sudden look of profound guilt crossing his hardened features. "I’m sorry, Mara. I brought this death sentence to your door."
The Hook: Mara looked down at her hands, covered in dirt, blood, and sea salt. A strange calmness washed over her. The scared bartender was gone. "We aren't running anymore," she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "How do we kill a god?"
