Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Ruin

I didn't drive to the office. I didn't call the police. I drove toward the truth, my knuckles white against the steering wheel, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

When I burst through the front door, the silence of the house hit me like a physical blow. The air felt heavy, stagnant. Liam was standing in the kitchen, his back to me, pouring a glass of water. Laura was gone. The girls were nowhere to be seen.

"Where are they?" I demanded, my voice sounding shrill and unrecognizable even to my own ears.

Liam didn't jump. He didn't even spill a drop of water. He turned slowly, his face a mask of practiced indifference. "Claire? You're home early. The girls are upstairs taking a nap. You seem... agitated."

"I saw it, Liam. I saw the footage," I spat, pulling my phone from my pocket and shoving it toward him. "I saw how you talked to her. I saw how you threatened her. What kind of 'boundaries' are you talking about? Why did every woman I hire run away terrified?"

He looked at my phone, then back at me. He didn't deny it. He didn't gaslight me with the usual, 'You're overreacting, honey.' Instead, his expression shifted into something colder, something predatory.

"You weren't supposed to see that," he said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I told you to trust the process, Claire. You never could leave well enough alone, could you?"

Before I could process his words, I heard a sound from upstairs—not the sound of children waking up, but the sound of a heavy door locking. My blood turned to ice. I lunged for the staircase, but Liam was faster. He grabbed my arm, his grip bruising, and leaned in close. His breath smelled like peppermint and deceit.

"If you go up there, Claire, you'll see exactly what happens when people don't respect the rules of this house. Do you really want to be a witness to that?"
