Chapter 6 - The Unthinkable Ending

The screen went black. I heard a gunshot, then silence.

I didn't cower in the room. I grabbed the emergency flare gun and the hard drive from the safe. I didn't go up the stairs; I climbed through the maintenance vent that led to the garden. The night air was freezing, biting at my skin.

I ran to the backyard, my heart screaming. I saw the intruders gathered around the back door, dragging a limp body toward a waiting van. It was Liam.

I knew I couldn't beat them, but I could destroy what they wanted. I stood in the shadow of the oak tree and shouted, "The ledger is gone! I burned it!"

The leader turned, his face illuminated by the moonlight. He smiled, a jagged, cruel thing. "You're lying, Claire. You were always too sentimental to burn your father's legacy."

He moved toward me, pistol raised. I didn't run. I pulled the trigger on the flare gun, not at him, but at the gas line feeding the house’s outdoor grill, which I had secretly left on earlier that evening.

The explosion wasn't cinematic; it was deafening. The back of the house erupted in a wall of fire, the force of the blast throwing the intruders off their feet. In the chaos, I sprinted toward the van, jumped into the driver’s seat—having swiped the keys from the leader’s belt while he was distracted by the flames—and slammed it into gear.

I didn't stop. I didn't look back at the burning house or the man who had been my husband, my protector, and my jailer.

Six months later, I sat on a porch in a country where no one knew my name. I watched my daughters play in the sand, their laughter ringing out, untainted by the shadow of the man who had lied to keep them safe.

I still keep the hard drive in a locket around my neck. I never opened it. Some secrets are meant to stay buried in the wreckage. I finally understood why the nannies quit. They weren't scared of Liam. They were scared of me—and what I would eventually become.

I didn't just escape my marriage; I escaped the girl who needed someone to protect her. Now, I am the one guarding the house. And God help anyone who tries to get inside.

THE END.
