Chapter 2 - The House of Whispers

I managed to twist out of his grip, ignoring the sharp pain in my shoulder, and sprinted for the upstairs hallway. My mind was a whirlwind of panic. Where are my daughters?

I reached the nursery door. It was locked from the outside. I hammered on the wood. "Annabelle! Nancy! Are you in there?"

Silence. Then, a muffled, terrified sob—Annabelle’s.

"Mommy?"

The sound of her voice broke me. I turned to face Liam, who was standing at the end of the hall, leaning casually against the banister. He wasn't chasing me. He was waiting.

"You've built a prison, Liam," I screamed, my voice echoing in the hallway. "Who are you? What have you done to my family?"

"I'm the man who provides everything," he said smoothly. "I provide the house, the lifestyle, the security. And in exchange, I require total control. The nannies... they were curious. They started asking questions about my 'work.' They started looking into the safe in the basement. They were a liability."

My heart stopped. The safe. I hadn't even thought about the safe. I had lived in this house for six years and never once asked what was behind the heavy steel door in the basement. I had assumed it was work documents, tax returns—boring, adult things.

"Open the door, Liam!"

"I can't do that, darling," he said, pulling a key from his pocket and dangling it between his fingers. "Because now, you're a liability, too."

He stepped toward me, and for the first time, I realized that I wasn't just in an unhappy marriage. I was in a cage. And the key-holder was a stranger I had been sleeping next to for a decade.
