Chapter 3 - The Basement Secret

I knew I couldn't win a physical fight. I pivoted, faking toward the bedroom, and then darted toward the stairs. Liam lunged, but I was smaller, faster. I tumbled down the staircase, bruising my hip, and scrambled toward the basement door.

I grabbed a heavy brass candle holder from the hallway table as I passed. I knew I wouldn't use it, but I needed something to hold, something to make me feel less like prey.

I hit the basement floor. The air was cool and smelled of damp earth and ozone. I saw the safe—a massive, industrial-grade vault that looked entirely out of place in our suburban home.

I didn't have the code, but I had something else. My phone. The footage I had recorded earlier showed Liam entering the kitchen, and through a lucky reflection in the toaster, I had caught a glimpse of him entering a keypad code on his own phone.

I scrambled to the safe, my hands shaking so violently I dropped the phone twice. Think, Claire. Think. I remembered the sequence from the reflection.

Click.

The door creaked open. I didn't see cash. I didn't see gold. I saw files. Thousands of them. Digital drives labeled with names—Rebecca, Mrs. Nevin, Laura.

I opened the folder labeled Laura. Inside were photos of her children—children she had never mentioned. They were dated yesterday. There were also bank statements, GPS tracking logs, and a letter—a resignation letter she had never been allowed to send.

Liam reached the bottom of the stairs. He stopped when he saw the safe open. His face didn't show anger anymore; it showed a terrifying, hollow defeat.

"You shouldn't have opened that, Claire," he whispered. "You think you're looking for answers about nannies. You have no idea what you've actually stumbled into."

"What is this?" I hissed, clutching a handful of files. "What have you been doing to these women?"

"I haven't been doing anything to them," Liam replied, stepping into the dim light. "I've been protecting them. You think you’re the victim here? You’re the reason they were in danger in the first place."

(Note: To maintain the high drama and pace for the remaining chapters, the story will delve into the twist that Liam wasn't the villain, but a "cleaner" trying to keep a dangerous secret from Claire's past, leading to a final standoff where Claire realizes she has been the one being protected all along.)
