Chapter 8 - The Final Twist

Six Months Later – Isle of Kythnos, GreeceThe Aegean Sun cast a brilliant golden light over the white-washed walls of the oceanfront villa. The air smelled of salt water, blooming bougainvillea, and fresh espresso.
Pamela sat on the terrace, wearing a sun dress that flowed comfortably around her waist. She had gained a healthy glow, her eyes no longer shadowed by grief or exhaustion. On the grass in front of her, Leo, Julian, and Sofia were babbling loudly, chasing a golden retriever puppy across the lawn.
"They're getting fast," Roman said, stepping out onto the patio holding two iced coffees. He looked relaxed, clad in a crisp linen shirt, the dark shadow of Chicago far behind him.
"Leo tried to climb the olive tree this morning," Pamela laughed, taking a coffee from his hand. "He has your temper."
"And Sofia has your heart," Roman replied, settling into the wicker chair beside her. "She refuses to eat unless you sit next to her."
Life had settled into a quiet, beautiful rhythm. The Voss empire in Chicago had been restructured under dummy corporations, funneled through European trusts that kept them infinitely wealthy and completely ghosted from federal eyes.
A soft chime sounded from Roman’s encrypted laptop resting on the table.
"A report from Donovan?" Pamela asked, sipping her coffee.
"Just final cleanup details from the Chicago property sales," Roman said, opening the laptop.
He typed in his thirty-two-digit security key. A single encrypted video file appeared in his inbox, sent from an anonymous server in Switzerland.
Roman clicked play.
The screen flickered, showing a clinical, white room. A woman sat in an interrogation chair, her hands cuffed to the steel table.
Pamela leaned in closer, her brow furrowing. "Who is that?"
The woman on the video turned her head toward the camera.
Pamela gasped, dropping her iced coffee glass. It shattered against the terracotta tiles.
The woman in the cuffed chair had sharp, cold features, dark hair, and eyes the exact color of storm clouds over Lake Michigan.
She looked... identical to Roman.
The voice of a Swiss interrogator spoke off-camera: "State your full name for the record."
The woman in cuffs smiled—a terrifying, familiar smile.
"My name is Elena Voss," the woman replied in a smooth, icy voice. "And you can tell my twin brother, Roman, that he was very foolish to think I died in that hospital."
Pamela pulled her gaze away from the screen, turning to Roman in absolute horror.
Roman sat completely paralyzed, his face drained of all color, staring at the screen as the video continued to play.
"Tell Roman..." Elena’s voice sneered from the speakers, "that the children were never meant for him. They were created from HIS blood and Pamela’s eggs in that lab... because those three triplets are the only legal heirs to the Voss bloodline trust in Switzerland worth three billion dollars. And now that he has gathered all three of them in one place..."
The screen went black.
A single text message popped up on the bottom of Roman's laptop screen:
WE KNOW WHICH ISLAND YOU ARE ON. SEE YOU SOON, BROTHER.
Pamela looked out over the sunlit lawn where her three tiny children were laughing in the green grass.
