CHAPTER 8 – The Final Secret Hidden Beneath Hale Manor

The underground vault was colder than anyone expected.

Federal agents moved cautiously through the concrete tunnels, their flashlights revealing rows of abandoned cribs covered in decades of dust.

Every crib carried a brass nameplate.

Every name belonged to a baby officially listed as "missing."

Jonathan Hale stood frozen.

His voice cracked.

"My father... kidnapped children?"

The lead investigator shook his head.

"We don't know yet."

"But whatever happened here... it was carefully hidden."

Emily slowly walked deeper into the chamber.

At the far end stood a massive steel door that had been sealed with heavy chains.

Above it, someone had carved six chilling words into the concrete.

"Only the last child remembers everything."

The agents broke the lock.

As the door creaked open, everyone expected another room full of evidence.

Instead...

It looked like a child's bedroom.

A tiny wooden bed.

Old toys.

Storybooks.

Drawings covering every wall.

One drawing made Jonathan stop breathing.

It showed two little boys holding hands beneath a large tree.

One was labeled Jonathan.

The other...

Nathan.

A third figure stood behind them.

Not their father.

Not their mother.

A woman.

Her face had been scratched out.

Emily frowned.

"Who is she?"

An elderly detective carefully removed another drawing from the wall.

On the back, a sentence was written in a child's handwriting.

"Mom said they will separate us tonight."

Jonathan's hands began to shake.

"I remember..."

Everyone turned toward him.

"For years I've had the same nightmare."

"Two boys running through a garden."

"A woman crying."

"A loud explosion..."

"I always thought it was just a dream."

Nathan, who had surrendered peacefully after revealing Project Phoenix, lowered his head.

"It wasn't a dream."

"It was the last memory we shared."

Silence filled the room.

Then the investigators uncovered one final object.

A videotape.

The date written across the label read:

October 14... Thirty Years Ago.

The tape was played immediately.

Static filled the screen.

Then an elderly woman appeared.

Jonathan gasped.

"...Mother."

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then your father is finally gone."

Tears streamed down her face.

"I failed to protect both of my sons."

She revealed the horrifying truth.

Project Phoenix had never been created to build wealth.

It was a secret operation that bought, sold, and falsified the identities of newborn children from powerful families.

Rich couples paid fortunes for babies.

Real birth records were destroyed.

Entire lives were rewritten.

Nathan had been taken because he witnessed something no child should ever see.

Jonathan had been spared only because their mother secretly hid him before the organization could erase both boys.

Then she spoke the words that stunned everyone.

"Jonathan..."

"Nathan..."

"You were never the real targets."

"You were only witnesses."

Emily whispered,

"Witnesses to what?"

The video continued.

"The true leader of Project Phoenix..."

"...was never your father."

The room fell completely silent.

"He worked for someone far more powerful."

The screen suddenly flickered.

The recording glitched.

Then another face appeared for just two seconds.

Every agent recognized him instantly.

The current President of the Hale Global Foundation.

The man Jonathan had trusted for twenty-five years.

The man currently running every hospital Jonathan had ever built.

Before anyone could react, every light inside the underground vault went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A deafening explosion echoed above Hale Manor.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

The emergency lights flickered on.

The steel exit door slammed shut automatically.

They were trapped.

Then a distorted voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"Jonathan..."

"You were never supposed to find this room."

"You've uncovered the first secret."

"But the second secret..."

"...dies with all of you."

The tunnel began collapsing.

And for the first time in his life...

Jonathan Hale realized that becoming the richest man in the world had never made him powerful.

May you like

It had only made him the final target.

THE END... OR IS IT?
